Cool. I was looking at that Neon and I was like no way.

I'm still having trouble with the whole Liberty thing making it through.

Do you have a lift on this thing or at least oversized tires? I'm guessing you haven't cut the fenders or installed a snorkel on it.

Welcome, to a fellow meteorologist. If you tell me your degree is from Penn State, I'll be even more impressed. ;)

Anyway, here's a lightning shot from the web cam:

Tonight would be the night to be a local. Looks like the park really cleared out after this afternoon's storms.

Its a jeep dude... one of the basic requirements the manufacturer has for ANY vehicle it makes is that it has to be able to pass through at least 20 inches of standing water. I can whip out my manual and scan page 247 about water for you if you really want. It specifically states "maximum speed in 20 inches of water is less than 5 mph"

its not like some suv's that are built on a minivan frame, jeeps are made with off roading in mind. Believe me if you want, I don't really care... I know what I drove through.

I've got one year left at Central Michigan... though we do have a Penn State grad at the office :D

Cedar Point did have a SVR warning tonight so I would not be surprised if there was some wind damage at the park -- in addition to the lightning which you nailed on that webcam shot! I guess I'll take a look when I'm there tomorrow (!)

I'm bored... this is about an 02 liberty and mine's and 06, but they talk about its off road capabilities, and they've actually gotten better since then

okay i'm done.... i think they made my point, and entertained myself,.... that it's still a jeep even if it looks "cute"

you're obviously in love with your car. the thing is, i dont anybody cares to see your attempts at marketing its off-road prowess. you made it through 20 inch water. congrats. if it wasn't a car that i normally see driven by high school girls, i'd probably be a little more impressed. lets talk about cedar point please.

hey GreatZo was wondering do you know how many confirm tornadoes touched down here in Michigan last night (6/21/06). I know at least one touched down. As you can tell I'm obsessed about the weather, I think it is exciting. A minute it could be nice, the next minute it could be nasty, it can entertain me so much.

You should go to Skywarn training and get your HAM License. Then I'm sure the folks over at KDTX would gladly give you a tour of their facility ;)

That would be cool. I just like watching it for fun. Maybe if I ever had the time I would.

The Liberty is a stellar off-roader, without question. The only thing that makes it minutely less capable than its predecessor is its increased weight and slight increase in size. I did things with my Liberty that would have literally destroyed other vehicles, both in its class and above.

And, if you're so concerned about the "image" of your vehicle, GM has a grossly overpriced Suburban for you, which is marketed directly toward people such as yourself - those that are more easily swayed by a car's image than its actual worth. Its called the H2.

Hello,

Here is the statement on the Michigan storm survey from Thursday afternoon -- conducted from the storms that hit on Wednesday night. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/product.php?site=dtx&product=PNS&issuedby=DTX&format=ci&version=1

Short version: Couldn't find any tornado damage in Monroe county, but confirmed an F0 in Lenawee county.

As was mentioned below... Skywarn training classes start up each spring, and being a HAM operator is another great way to get involved with storm spotting as well!

OK, I'm headed to CP now.

i didn't deny the fact thats its a good off road vehicle, the best in its class. but its class is the compact SUV. If i wanted a car simply for off-roading, i'd get a Land Rover LR3/Discovery (or a Range Rover if i wanted to spend more money). The H2 is a grossly overpriced, gas-guzzling monstrosity that is one of the best off-roaders out there. I'd rather have a Range Rover or even a Grand Cherokee.

djDaemon's avatar

The H1 is a great off-roader, but not one of the best.

Plus, if you'd rather spend the money on an LR, go ahead. There is absolutely no comparison between the Libby and the LR in terms of bang-for-your-buck. None whatsoever.

And if you were really serious about off-roading, a Wrangler would be your best option.

Brandon,

Have you ever been offroading in an H1?

If properly equipped it can go places no other vehicle would imagine. Trust me, the Marine Corps with some help from myself has proven it. ;)

An H2 is just a Chevy truck with a different body so there's no comparison...you might has well have an Escalade if you want to offroad in an H2.

Sorry - typo. I did mean an H2.

And, yes, I have heard many exciting stories about my Brother's (USMC) experiences in the H1.

Brandon

You are completely wrong about the h2 it does share a base chassis but that is where that ends it is a great offroader i have demo'd one and love its off road capabilities.. also rented one in vegas and took it to the dunes.... seen plenty of jeeps that didnt make it through the tall dunes deep sand and the HEAT..... jeeps are nice but the baddest 4x4 is without a doubt the H1 or humvee that loopy is tsalking about

Man, the wind here in Berne, Indiana was crazy yesterday. At about 2:35 I noticed a little bit of thunder and wind noise so I went over to my sliding glass door to have a look. At first it was just the wind at about 50-60 mph, and then some rain started falling and the wind picked up to somewhere around 70-80 mph. Of course I couldn't help but laugh at the Canadian Geese that were in the pond outside the apartment building struggling against the wind. About 3-5 minutes into this sudden storm the power went out, and I went down to move the car into our garage. Well, silly me forgot that the garage door runs on electricity, so I got soaked. After another 10-15 minutes of this insane wind and rain it calmed down. So our power was out from a little before 3 until about 11 today. I have a 20 second clip of the storm right after it rolled in, so I'll see if I can't get it up.

Three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40, and a hammer. Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't, WD-40 if it doesn't move and should, and the hammer as the last resort.

djDaemon's avatar

I find it very difficult to believe that a 6,400lb vehicle would do better in sand than a vehicle that weighs 3,800lb.

That has always been why the H2 is not much of a competitor off-road. Its far too big and way too heavy to go most places real off-roaders are supposed to be able to go.

Brandon

Quit comparing H2 to any off road vehicle. They are not sold for you to take boony bouncing or off-roading they are sold so people can inflate their egos and pretend they are awesome. I wouldn't knock it though, it will still run over any Jeep. ;) Remember GM has the best trucks, DCX has the worst.

Yeah, it's canadian, but it's the same trucks sold here.

If you want to do a comparo using the Hummer brand, use the now defunct to the public H1. Built only for off road competion and government purposes.

When it comes to off-roading and water fording, H1 wins hands down over any Jeep. Higher approach and ground clearence and stellar water fording height. There is no production Jeep that even comes close.

However in the field, Hummers are dog slow and weigh too much. Leaving Jeep as the better buy.

Also, the H2 is only 2/3 a GMT-800 Suburban frame. With the rear 1/3 being developed only for Hummer use.

There will be an "H4" soon. It's more than likely going to be very similarto Jeep when it comes to off roading.
