Media Day Question

Some people just need to read the title "MEDIA DAY" Are you in the Media? Then if you were invited, great. If you write for a neighborhood fyler, hit the bricks. The only ppl that will be there are bigger media, (tv stations, CITY newspapers) and of course the cp big-wigs, and handful of lucky employees that start before the park opens :-) Jeff seems to be getting a bit exaspirated, just leave him to the running of the site, and not fighting about who gets into Media Day.

Uhhh I wrote for my yearbook. . .do you think I will be invited for Media Day, or should I call ahead? I think it would be a lot of fun to go and ride all the rides before everyone else and stuff like that.

(Juuuuust kidding, of course. :) The whole idea makes me laugh. I will be happy enough to WATCH what is on TV/in newspapers after Media Day.)

While most organizations are good at filtering out Real Media from posers, not everyone is so blessed. A good friend of mine used to do a weekly one-hour call-in sports talk show for Carnegie Mellon's student radio station. We were grad students at CMU together, and had overlapped as undergraduates at Berkeley. One year, he managed to con the NCAA into giving him a media credential for the first two weekends of the Division I basketball tournament. We thought this was pretty funny, since WRCT had maybe 10 listeners total, at a Division-III school no less. But, it got him into all three games that Berkeley played, with seats at the press table and access to the on site media room. Can you say "free lunch"?

The only problem was that the media are not allowed expressions of partisan support at the press table. I would have paid money to see the look on his face during particularly tense moments, knowing he was (a) unable to say anything but (b) desperately wanted to.

There you go.. want to ride even before media day.. Goto work at the park..

I remember the employee's who started at the park early last year riding WT a week or two before media day.

Yea, we all know how hard it is to say nice things about Cedar Point in front of a camera. And the selection process among enthusiasts is grueling! I was really lucky this year, I only got 2 questions wrong on my "Media Day Enthusiast Invite Test." What did you put down for question number 4? Maybe someday, I can be as "enthusiastic" as you! Good thing they let you in! =

Please DO NOT call the PR department and ask/beg to be invited. Janice, Bryan and Robin do not have the time to spend answering a ton of phone calls from people who just want to come to media day. They do have a certain criteria of who they invite. Just because you write for the yearbook, or your company newsletter does not qualify you for an invitation to media day. INVITATIONS will be mailed to those who are INVITED to media day. Trust me, I worked with Janice, Robin and Stephen in the PR department from Jan 95-Dec 97, media day 00 and every year during the "media day frenzy" the phones ring off the hook, all people begging to be invited. If you are a legitimate (for the most part) you will be invited without asking. The park has worked hard to develop media lists, lists used for mailings, announcements, and yes, media day invites.

Also, as a side note, because of the number of people who show up for media day and the lenght of time it takes to get the media on the trains (strapping the mics and cameras) the park runs a limited amount of trains, and most people do not get a ton of rides in. It is not coaster mania, it is MEDIA DAY.

let the freakshow begin.

I was just asking what I thought to be a legit question. I know that obviously the park can't just let anyone in for media day, and realize it's not an excuse for everyone on their high school newpaper to skip school to ride the new coaster.

I only asked because my editor recently found out I was a CP freak, and said that she would love to have me at media day to do a story for the paper. She just asked me to find out how she would go about having our paper be invited, so I figured this would be the place to ask. I certainly discourage anyone from bugging the PR department who doesn't have any reason to be there, but since I am with a legit newspaper, I thought it was an appropriate question.

Ralph, you are absolutly correct (your asking a legit question). The PR department does update media mailing lists on the off season. Your paper is most likely on the mailing list. Usually the invite is sent to the editor and the editor can decide who from the media outlet/paper goes to the event.

Thanks Skip, that was the kind of answer I've been waiting to hear. My editor definately knows I'm interested, so I should have no problem there.

Well if you don't get a lot of rides, it would be exactly like CoasterMania. ;) Just kidding! I got lots of rides on Mean Streak!

Yeah, Mean Streak was sweet in the pitch black...if only I didn't know the layout from riding it so much. The re-rides were nicee too!

What is most anticipated event of 2003? the debut of Dragster, the release of Metallica's new album, the release of Terminator 3, or the release of Matrix:Reloaded...tough call.

Question... What do they do if it is very bad weather on media day? Do they reschedule or just cancel it? Also, when do they normaly send out invitations... I'm getting antsy!

:) "if aquarium gravel is so bad for you... how come it tastes so good?" :)

Question:

I don't know if any of you saw this, but on the travel channel they did a small blurb on cedar point and the breakers hotel, and it was me and my family who **acted** haha in that.... do you think something like that would qualify me for media day? I mean I advertised CP to the world on the travel channel....what do you'll think? and have youll seen it?

Milleniumbouya, on 2/23/03 you stated that you HAD been invited to media day and that you had already recieved your media kit in the mail. Now, on 3/27, you ask when CP would normally send out invitations as you're getting antsy. If you already had been invited by Feb. 23 why would you be waiting for an invite now? Forgive the ribbing, I just couldn't help but notice the discrepency between posts.

I was on the front page of the Sandusky Register in '01, I was on the Discovery Channel Top 10 Coasters show in '02. I am a walking, talking and driving CP free "PR" person, those things did not "qualify" me to be invited to media day. So your answers are: no, and no, I haven't seen the show you're talking about.
I can not believe someone reopened this thread again. Better yet, I can't believe I actually replied to it! ;)

jose, I did get my media day package in the mail, and I have been told by PR that I will get invited to go, however I have not recieved an official invitation in the mail from Cedar Point telling me when and where to meet etc. Just because I recieved a media kit doesn't mean that I have gotten the official invite. I forgive the ribbing as many people on here like to make up stories that are not quite... well not true. Does anyone have the answer to the weather question?

I'm sorry, I meant media kit. It's just a folder with the press releases and 2 CDs with the videos and pictures from the website on it... I can describe it to you in detail if you would like. Sorry, I had just gotten up for my 9:55 class and was quite comotose! HONESTLY I don't care if you don't believe me Jeff... it means absalutely nothing to me, I would just like an answer to my question if anyone knows, thanks.

Don't hold your breath on that invite dude. People get press kits without getting invited to media day all the time.

And yes Jo, every time a situation like this comes up, I just say, "where's Raptor Jo when you need her?" It happens when I go out to dinner, during class, on GTTP and CBuzz, probably about 10 times a day! :)

Ha, I love it "Where's Raptor Jo when you need her". I was thinking Raptor Jo would say something like...CM for me NONE FOR YOU.

As far as media day, (Jeff hit it) those of us at MD last year can't guarantee MD this year. MD is not CM. Those invited respect and thank CP for letting them come. This thread reminds me of the saying "Those who know don't talk" which I think Jeff has trademarked.
