Media Day Question

Ralph Wiggum's avatar
This is mainly for someone like Jeff or Walt who has been to a media day before. How do you get into media day? I know you obviously have to be with some sort of media, but does the park invite you, or do you have to ask them? I ask this because I currently work for a small town newspaper (Sylvania Herald), and was thinking I could maybe cover the event for them. It's probably nothing more than a dream, but one can hope.

I would think your first step would be to read all the info provided on CP's site:

http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/news/co_info/public_relations.cfm

And email the PR department (email provided on the page above).

Media day is for the media. That's the first rule. They invite enthusiasts they have a relationship with because they know that they'll say nice things for the TV cameras.

Second, I know a lot of people think that media day is this fantastic ERT opportunity, but more often than not, it's far from it. I sat last year on WT for a good 20 minutes while they tried to find a reporter that was supposed to ride. Not the most comfortable thing in the world!

Jeff, my friend and I are going to media day, and I was wondering if we still will be able to ride TTD a decent amount. Will there be lines? About how many times did you get to ride WT or MF when you went? Also what is the schedule for the day normaly? Thanks for any info.

You can't just walk up and be let in. You have to be invited by the park to attend. If invited, you will receive information in the mail.
Bryan, we have been invited but neither of us have gone before and we're curious about what happens. I got my media package the other day in the mail....mmmm.

That's funny, because no invitations have been sent. Furthermore, if you were invited, you should know better not to tell anyone.

Believe what you want to, we'll see you there on May 1 there is nothing I can say to make you believe me so I won't try. I don't really care if you think I'm going or not, I really just want to know what to expect from the day. Also I'm curious as to why I should not be telling people, I've told a lot of people about it because I'm so excited. I wasn't told to keep quite or anything! Thanks.

Why? Because I'm sure the last thing the marketing department wants or has time for is every kid who reads GTTP calling them and asking if they can come, that's why.

I guess then my question would be how does CP pick who comes? Obviously they invite the major newspapers and TV stations to come, but does that mean a small town paper like mine has no chance of being invited?

Why would Cedar Point book the Media Day on May 1st, so many weeks away, before having even tested the ride? I'd be willing to bet invites will be mailed when a date can be set, and it will be set to when Mr. Jasper says people can ride.

As for the media being invited, I would get in contact with the Cedar Pizzie PR Department, and see if you can be a recipient of future media mailings (EPK Discs, News Releases, Media Day Invites).

Ugh... are you even listening? They don't have time to and they're not going to invite any person who calls them up and wants to go. Do not call them. Do not waste your, or their, time.

Cedar Point's PR deptartment is overly willing to cooperate with many media outlets, sufficed to say that your small paper is a credible one, they are very open to the media, but as Jeff has stated before, "no kids allowed" which means, don't call and ask, can I come to the park 3 days before it opens to make myself feel special?"

Think about it... at a minimum 3,000 people visit this site in a day. If only 1% of them took the advice to call them, they'd be fielding more than 200 calls a week.

Heaven forbid anyone from getting to go to media day other than Jeff. Especially a journalist. Good luck Ralph Wiggum, I hope you get to go. If you do I'd love to read your article.

/me smacks head in disbelief

Why do you want to make it about me? I don't care who is there, I'm not even positive I'll be there. You guys are making media day out to be some kind of amazing A-list event. It's not. It's a working day for media professionals, not a day for the kiddies to cut school so they can tell all their friends they were there.

I feel your pain, Jeff! I do not know of any way to explain it better.
