Mean streak is not closing in July

I think the disagreement comes from the idea that GCI wouldn't change the layout at all. There's a lot of elevation to work with, even if the top view doesn't change dramatically.

Except they wouldn't. There is nothing in their history that says they would have the expertise to come in and do anything more than change out the wood and help support the structure.

I don't believe they've ever done a full sale change on layout at all, aside from Raging Wolf Bobs. And even then, that ride was nothing compared to the scale of Mean Streak.

And that's the crux of it. GCI doesn't do giant coasters like this. They stick to small, but wild coasters, instead of the giant, speed demons like Mean Streak was when it opened.

That's why RMC makes the most logical sense. They can come in and make Mean Streak even better than it was when it opened. And I haven't heard great reasons why that would be a bad thing.

Just because GCI hasn't done a certain modification, that doesn't mean they don't have the expertise. I would bet that they certainly do. Any type of reprofile or redesign of Mean Streak would be welcome IF that is even on the table for CP's plans at this point.

Believe me... GCI isn't the answer to the Mean Streak situation.

This, so much this. There are many other logical reasons why GCI isn't as good of an option as mentioned continuously in this thread, but the best reason is this.

The argument isn't about the likelihood, it's about the ability of each company and the preference of those discussing the possibility.

This argument is in part about the likelihood. It's in part about our preference. It's also about how Mean Streak isn't closing in July.

Agreed, Renegade is correct.

Likelihood is a big part of this otherwise why even discuss it, as their will be no 'conclusive winner' of the RMC/GCI debate.

Until Cedar Fair decides if, what & when anything may happen to mean streak.

I've never suggested GCI is more likely, just that I would like it more.

Let's come back to reality. Do you really think that just because the 8th or 9th tear down Mean Streak thread was started that it changes anything the park is doing with their money for capital expenses? The 5th, 6th, and 7th didn't stop them from building Valrayvn did it? If Cedar Point got a new coaster at the "dream" level of this and other threads they would have over 30 by 2030. If these threads had any significance it would have happened in 2014 because obviously it's so "cheap." Maybe you're looking to hard at a problem that doesn't exist. Changing the ride might not be as important as made out in these threads. Since they just built a new steel coaster.

Just want to point out that a steel coaster could be built in at least 2 locations without taking out anything but a dinosaur exhibit that was pretty much given to them. Cedar Point's new for 2017 attraction is going to be a waterpark addition. Look at KI this year. They got 1 structure with 6 slides on it. That's it. That's what you should expect. As long as they can advertise something new.

I think CP need to make the park one gate and raise ticket prices $10. At KI the waterpark is elbow to elbow all summer long. There is so much more potential in melding the 2 parks into 1 than doing anything to Mean Streak. They would need to reconfigure the entrances on both sides of Soak City to do this. But if you look at KI they have so much more than CP. It would take 30 million for the 2 waterparks to be comparable.

The economics of a combined dry/water park ticket at Kings Island are not necessarily the same at Cedar Point. The latter is much more of a resort destination, which is supported better by a multi-park, multi-day structure. If anything, it would behoove CP to figure out how to (someday) add a third ticketed park (or experience, or whatever) to flesh out these two.

Where they would build such a thing is another question.

Ensign is correct, kings island is very close to two large population cities, which is why they also have a third pass options (gold pass), and can draw more of a daily crowd that can on short notice go to water park etc...

Cedar point is a destination location, you have to plan to go there for most people. Which is why the seperate parks make sense.

The idea of having a third park is a good one. Now that you mention it, a few years ago I thought of the concept Cedar Point Classics Park at the former airport (before they announced the sports field) that would have the same feel to Knoebels. It would've provided it's own distinctive niche to any other Cedar Fair park, or most parks for that matter. It would've been a ticket per ride based concept so that people who don't ride many rides can pick and chose what they pay for but season/platinum pass holders can have the advantage of unlimited rides. They could've brought back classics (or rides inspired by classics), i.e. a flume ride, a replica of the pirate ride, coasters inspired by Jumbo Jet, Wildcat, a wooden bobsled much like Flying Turns inspired by Avalanche Run, maybe relocate Big Dipper from Geauga Lake, Turnpike Cars, Schwabinchen, Rotor, etc., but that was just a grown man's childhood dream of loving carnival like atmospheres...

A) I found it interesting in one of the articles on the sports park that it was referred to as Cedar Fair's first foray into that market. Can't help but wonder: is CF considering similar concepts for some of its other parks?

B) Agreed. It makes sense to keep Cedar Point and Soak City as separate gates. Soak City, I think, works as an upsell for a Cedar Point visit, since the vast majority of people at Cedar Point have chosen the park as their destination, whereas at a Kings Island or a Carowinds or a Michigan's Adventure, guests are using the park as a day visit or as part of a larger vacation; free access to a waterpark is an additional enticement.

I'm a Marxist, of the Groucho sort.

I can't see any appeal of another gated ride park a few miles off the causeway on Rye Beach Road. Even if it was included in my pass, I can't really see a scenario where I would go there to ride old flat rides.

The nostalgic old guy in me would enjoy a park that offered up the Cedar Point he remembers from the 70s (Sky Wheel, original Shoot the Rapids, Dodgems up by the main gate) but yeah, I don't think it would be an attraction for many people.

What kind of track does RMC use? I know there are two kinds but only remember Topper track.

It's called I-Box. It's what Six Flags has been using.

So good, in fact, that CF is actually building a third property as we type. No, it's not a self-cannibalizing amusement park, but Sports Force Parks is sure to be a nice revenue stream.

Brandon

I'd be happy with any of the above suggestions for the new park, as long as they include a runway.

Pete's avatar

Yes, models would take LiveE to the next level and it..... Oh sorry, I bet you were talking about a runway for airplanes.
