Mean Streak?

Birdman: Roller coaster capital of the world has never had an objective metric. It was and is a slogan, nothing more. Magic Mountain "besting them" had nothing to do with trademarking a slogan.

I guess my point was that the coaster count was likely the reason they developed the slogan in the first place. I was talking more about the origins and evolution of the phrase. I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't trademarked until SFMM built their 18th.

As it happens, they filed the trademark in 2008 but had been using it since 2001, and SFMM didn't have 18 until 2013 (although CP had already gone down to 16 a year earlier with the removal of Wildcat). So that answers that question.

So by your definition, CP&LE, is a roller coaster.

I just hope whatever they do, they just make that area more accessible. Whether it be a bridge, re route CP&LE, OR (Best option) connect the Gemini Midway near slingshot around to the Mean Streak midway. Boom, traffic to that area of the park!

It would not surprise me if this is the last year for Mean Streak.

From what I hear it will be opening Memorial Day Weekend.

We all saw it coming with Space Spiral with many days of no operation.

I see a Soak City expansion next year where Challenge Racing used to sit and then in 18 we will see something happen with the MS plot of land.

STR site will be interesting. I don't see anything happening with that land though in the next year. Probably 2 or 3.

No, I said a light railroad track, which is what is said in dictionaries. As well as the fact that the train cars aren't technically "open cars"

CP Top 5: 1) Steel Vengeance 2) Maverick 3) Magnum 4) Raptor 5) Millennium

Pete said:On the Mean Streak footer markings, does anyone know if RMC conversions had footer markings like that before the ride was converted?

I'm sure they had marked and surveyed the ride in similar ways. There is no specific indication of what these are for, outside of a reference to the crew that need this information.

What I'm getting at is it seems like the individual footer markings are a little different from general survey markings. It seems like the footers are marked for something like service or modifications of that particular footer or bent. If that has anything to do with RMC who knows, but it would be interesting if other RMC rebuilds had those same dots on the footers.

I thought the same thing. I was trying to Google some construction/reconstruction photos of rides that got the RMC treatment, but came up with nothing. Of course, I am at work so it wasn't a thorough search.

How does rerouting the CP & LE Railroad increase accessibility to Mean Streak? Its not like the CP & LE RR really keeps people from going back there. In order for traffic to increase there, you need something to draw them there. Clearly, Mean Streak doesn't do that.

Me too. Not for the ride though, but for the outfits and hairdos.

My take on the slogan is that the marketing department was looking for marketable angles and someone came up with "we have a lot of coasters, we can call ourselves the coaster capital of the world." Park X with five really great coasters could justifiably argue they're the coaster capital of the world (if CF hadn't trademarked the phrase :-) ) based on quality rather than quantity.

Blue Man Group in Chicago has run ads saying "If you haven't seen Blue Man, you haven't seen Chicago." I always want to get a Sharpie and amend the ad to read "....unless you've been to Orlando, New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Berlin, Tokyo, any of the cities on our domestic tour, any of the cities on our South American tour or any of the cities on our Asian tour." Like "coaster capital", it's more hyperbole than fact.

When was it that RMC asked for workers in Kentucky, Tennessee, and California last year? It definitely be interesting if they say Ohio this year. if Mean streak is only made to be half as good as Wicked Cyclone then it will be a great ride

My Top 10- 1.Steel Vengeance 2.Fury 325. 3.Maverick 4. EL Toro 5. Millennium Force 6. Wicked Cyclone 7. Intimidator 305 8. Thunderhead 9.Boulder Dash 10. Diamondback 11. Lightning Rod

Why do people think CF would use RMC? So far they have alway used GCI

Count me as someone who always (and still does) loved the RR tracks before the entrance to Mean Streak. I find it to be a cool and unique touch to an already eye-pleasing attraction.

And Pete, I had done the same and came up with nothing as well.

Promoter of fog.

I think we all need to take a collective breath here. The trains just got back from PTC headquarters from refurbishment. Let's see how much track work was done in the off-season.

Yes, there is a chance the ride will undergo some sort of major retrofit in the next few years. But the chances are also just as likely that the train refurbishment and yearly trackwork and inspection was just delayed this year and it will be business as usual for a few or even several more seasons.

I still think Tony is just playing with spray paint cans to screw with all of us.

There was a time when Kennywood was the coaster capital of the world. :)

KW hasn't considered the Log Jammer a coaster in quite some time. In the parks 1980s defense, the LJ does drop and rise. I always thought that was a neat log flume feature rarely else seen.

...Log Jammer? They actually count a flume as a coaster? O__o

Huh. Now that I think about it, both are gravity propelled- one is brought to the crest of a hill via chains or cables, one via a conveyor belt- and then brought through the circuit via gravity and either wheels or water. So... WOULD a flume be a type of coaster?
