I do not know of a B&M coaster ever being straight up scrapped. Cedar Point would most likely move the ride but that if this were going to happen I would expect footers at one of their parks or some type of prep work going on by now. Hopefully they do new trains, alter the 2nd half of the course, take out the break on the first drop, and change the name and paint scheme.
If marketed right the move would be like adding a new coaster for the price of a large flat (<15 mil). A new coaster that size new would easily be over 25 million.
Is anyone else perturbed by the "big announcement" that was more of a teaser than anything? I get the marketing strategy behind it but I was pretty disappointed.

^^coasterJay,I was referring to the previous post, which suggested adding new elements and enclosing part of the ride in a mountain or structure.
If the park were to simply trade out standing trains for seated trains, then they aren't really getting a new coaster. They'd be getting the same coaster with different, well, seats, unlike SFOT or SFNE etc, which got/will get coasters that incorporate new elements to the layout.
Ahh - ok. Yeah - they aren't going to enclose the ride, they did that one already once. New elements, maybe, but not any radical change from what's already there. Different seats will make it a new ride IMO. I would love to have Dominator back within 45 minutes from my house again!

No... I think Cedar Point closing a major roller coaster at the Roller Coaster Capital of the World is indeed a big announcement. I for one am not disappointed at all, in fact I am more excited now than I was last night about what the near future may hold for Cedar Point.

No. In fact, it's actually refreshing to see Cedar Point having so much fun with this, which they obviously are.
Three words:
Enjoy the journey.
Promoter of fog.

I don't understand why some suggest the park will relocate the ride. Bryan Edwards again is quoted as saying explicitly the ride is not a favorite of park goers saying "people vote with their feet, the numbers aren't there." If the park admits its not popular anymore, why send it somewhere else?
When did he say that? If it has been mentioned in this thread excuse me for not reading it but after I read a few posts of the same things over and over I stopped trying to keep up with everything.

I really hope Mantis is either relocated or scrapped all together.
The only way I feel that I would enjoy the ride again (standing OR seated) is if some design changes were made. Yes, the first drop and huge loop is nice, but after that, the layout is just slow and lackluster to me. I feel that this can be attributed to the fact that the ride's original intention was to run with stand up trains (and thus have less forces acting on the rider).
Ultimately, I think it is time for a new experience altogether instead of trying to reinvent a new one. A re-tracking would involve the costs of new footers, new supports, and new track, add in the trains, station alterations, and paint job, and you have a significant hole dug already.
Is this less than a new coaster? Of course! But does the "experience" of Mantis and the current configuration really warrant trying to change it?
I'm doubtful.
has anybody ever thought about the whole grim reaper thing in the video? im thinking it could have a possible link as to whatever may be coming in the future, or is it just a tie to the original idea of calling it banshee? im not sure but i bet if we look into it we could maybe find a hint or two

Thanks, I had not read that article yet today. What I find most interesting about that piece of journalism is that the title states Mantis is to be torn down, however I never noticed where anyone from Cedar Point said that it would be torn down...
I find the survey on the article interesting that asks "will you miss the Mantis?" And over 60% said yes.
"Take one last STAND" does it mean we will have one last chance to ride this STANDING up then will be able to ride i sitting down?
I think there are clues in the video. Look at the reaper, he's taking the Mantis cars...which are obviously standing cars...
Just a thought...
How about removing Mantis, shipping the track to Dorney where a new station is built to accommodate sit down trains. Instant new ride which is a different experience from Mantis. Maybe "Roo" will be the name of the ride when it moves to Dorney?
Tony did say at the Winter Chill Out not to miss the 2015 event. Would he say that if all there was to see were new trains and a paint job? Doubtful.
As far as the Marina rumor, all I'm sharing is that it involves work on a different area of the midway, but close enough to Mantis that the area could be part of a really big attraction that also involves the Mantis area.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
Well the nostalgic side of me is just a tad sad to see it go. I remember when it was announced/built. I thought Raptor was the best thing at that time and when I found out it was the same company the expectation was through the roof. It ended up being a let down of course. I looked up the webcams today and thought that it was one fine looking piece of roller coaster... what could have been...
Ah well, on to bigger and better things!

Then he moves over and the shot is him standing in front of the lift and large loop as if he's taking it all.
I guess we see what we want to see.

Why share only a little bit? Not like you're going to get in trouble or anything.
If it is indeed being removed totally it is crazy to think it had just an 18 year stint at the park. I get the numbers were low, but there had to be more riders on Mantis than say Mine Ride.
This further strengthens the rumor of a refurb in my opinion. If the whole point to remove the ride is the space, why not remove an older ride like Mine Ride? They both take up relatively the same amount of space. I'm sure the maintenance costs on Mine Ride (upkeep on wood, older trains, hardware, etc) is far greater than Mantis.

As I stated earlier, when Tony tweeted that the announcement was today he said it was a major announcement. He never said anything about it being for 2015. We were all tricked into thinking it was 2015 but he never even put the 2015 hashtag on the tweet.
