I was around when the Blue Streak opened in 1964 and then ruled at Cedar Point for 14 years until the Gemini debuted in 1978. I remember late at night the park crowds would congregate at the Gemini, screaming and getting rowdy from the nightime thrill of riding the twin coaster. Riding it over and over until the park closed. Of course the Gemini ruled til 1989. Once the Magnum greeted the 1989 season, the Blue Streak became a forgotten coaster and the Gemini became immediately boring. The Magnum had a great run, ruling for 10 magnificent seasons. And even thought the Raptor was/is a fun alternative, it never overcame the Magnum's mighty rule at Cedar Point.
However, now the Magnum has joined the ranks of the Blue Streak and Gemini, becoming nothing more than a nostalgic coaster at Cedar Point. For now, there is a new kid in town! The Millenium Force rules at Cedar Point....
The big polls that CP recognizes (Amusement Today) say otherwise...
Who won this years golden ticket award for No.1 steel coaster on earth?
We all know that a lot of people now favor MF over Magnum, but please don't make huge claims that make Magnum look lost and forgotten when it's far from being so.

Judging from current lines...

Dispatch Master, This is Transport one! I'm losing control, I'm losing control!
Magnum is still a great coaster and never will be forgotten.
Judging from current lines... well it is a new coaster as all new coasters have very long lines.

I like MF, but if Magnum hadn't exisisted, MF would be my #1. But Magnum is my #1 and will be maybe for awhile, or at least until Phantom's Revenge opens up. MF does fit in my Top 5

If anyone saw the golden ticket thing at www.amusementtoday.com then they would see that Magnum XL-200 is #1 with 700 points. Second is Millennium Force with 400 (in there somewhere) point. Magnum has once again blown out the competition. Don't say its rein is over until that poll actually says something like Magnum 400 Millennium Force 398.

Hey Magnum2G3...the reign isn't over but the countdown has begun. If you read the story about the Golden Tickets you'll see the surprise at how well MF scored in it's first year...basically ballots are mailed in May and need to be returned in July less than two months after MF opened. I will be stunned if MF does not surpass Magnum in the next poll.
CP will have the number 1 Steel coaster but which one will it be?
To BeemanCP65
Why do you say... "if Magnum hadn't exisisted, MF would be my #1" but then conclude by saying "MF does fit in my Top 5"???
Do you only have one coaster from a park in your top 5?
waiting for Dan to Chime in.....

We all might have our own opinion about which coaster is #1, but what I think Rideman is saying if that for most people, GP included, MF is the #1, signature ride at CP (please, correct me if I am wrong). That means it is the main reason people will come to the park. It is also the ride that most people will make their last ride of the night. You can feel the excitement in the air at night while waiting for that final ride, and the excitement is greatest in the MF line. I think if you polled the GP, an overwhelming majority would rank MF above Magnum.
Now now everyone! None of the older coasters are forgotten! Maybe the lines aren't 2 hours long but each holds their own significance. I don't know about you guys but the Blue Streak was my first coaster. And to this day I see little first graders standing in line with a look of terror on their face. The Blue streak is not forgotten.
Same goes with the Gemini. Everyonr from little kids to teenagers to college students to middle aged people to seniors stand in line for the thrill of the first seat on the Gemini. The Gemini is not forgotten.
Also the MAGNUM is NOT forgotten! although the lines have died down considerably since MF oppened. I still remember seeing the sign saying 1 1/4 hours. The Magnum has not lost any of its glory. No coaster can EVER steel the spotlight away from the Magnum. THe magnum is not forgotten.
Each roller coaster @ CP had it golden years but no CP coaster will EVER be forgotten!

Amen, Amen. When ever there is a new coaster, everyone wants to ride it. I don't know if Magnum is number 2 or not. In my book Millennium Force is #1. But I don't think that anyone should say something is over by the amount of years.

I don't think that MF will have higher or lower numbers next year. The ballots may have been due July, but keep in mind that all of those participating in that polls are hard core enthusiasts who have all aready been on MF by the due date, probably before the park opened for the season on AAA day.

sidenote: You guys are all attacking the wrong coaster anyway. You should be comparing numbers between MF and Raptor, not MF and Magnum. Raptor is the one that got docked two spots on the list due to MF. Plus you guys keep saying that Magnum's line is becoming shorter and sorter. I want to know which days you guys are going because the lines at Magnum look to me as long as they always have been, fact, there was one day this year that I was at CP, the line for Magnum was so long that they had to close it's main queue enterence and open up the overflow enterence by the John Deere display, which I have not seen happen in a good long time.

Old Timer Tim I meant that if Magnum was never built, then MF would be my #1. But since Magnum is around, its my #1. Here is my current Top 5 list:
1. Magnum
2. Raptor
3. MF
4. Thunderbolt
5. Steel Phantom [might be replaced by Apollo's Chariot after Setember 4th]

Magnum still rules for me. How can you say it is now a forgotten coaster. I don't think any coaster is a forgotten coaster at CP. I still like riding the Blue Streak, it may not be the biggest or the fastest coaster at the Point, but I still enjoy it. New coasters always have long lines, because everyone wants to ride the new coaster. I remember waiting 2 1/2 hours for corkscrew the year it opened.
I agree - each coaster has its own uniqueness, its own personality, if you will. MF is sleek and elegant, beauty and grace combined with ultimate height and speed; Magnum is classic steel with its classic lines and elements; Raptor is the power of ultimate flight; Blue Streak is a gracious woodie that never fails to make me laugh with delight; etc. This is why I don't think CP will move to tear ANY coaster down in the next few years, at least, because they do have such a wonderful variety. Never gone, Never forgotten!
BTW - Look soon for my new website featuring coaster characters!

I can't beleive I'm reading this thread! I don't know where to start with this thread. Magnum will always be the king of all *steel* coasters. Like Jerry and I have always said you can build them taller, faster, and steeper but you can't build them better than Magnum. BUT just like Blue Streak and Gemini; Magnum will pass on the tourch to MF as the park's "crown jewel."
Now here is where the problems come along Millennium Force AND Superman in New England are AWESOME rides. Those two rides both gave me the same rush that Magnum has always given me on a consistant basis.
I know that its been a hot topic all season whats better Magnum or the Force, especially for me, everyone has been bugging me on what I like better, then to throw S:ROS in from New England makes it harder. I know that I've changed my mind like the weather but I've finally come to my final decision on ranking the three coasters.
1.
2.
3.
I'm not saying now, I will let everyone know when I write my season trip report for the year at the end of October. You can guess all day long but you won't beleive it!
