Magnum hauling...

Magnum was hauling some major a$$ last night... The trims on the turnaround were used very lightly... The trains just ran like bats out of hell... Way to go Magnum!! :)
OMG. They were running like that earlier this evening. I don't even remember feeling the trims tonight. Back seat was some serious air, moreso that usual.

Toasted flying banana's are fun.

Maggie has been running unfrigginbelieably (is thata word?)as of late. Even with the trims on the thing was crazy last Friday. I have never got air that crazy in my life. I have bruises a week later and I love them LOL

At the same time I can say to myself how can anyone dislike this ride and I can see how they can. It's too much for them. Oh well shorter lines on my Baby.

Just wait till ya'll see my PPP costume. ;)

Welcome back Magnum riders how was your ride?

That drop from the second turn in the bowtie into the second tunnel was insane... so many G's going from lateral to vertical so quickly...

After my 8th ride in a row (after 5 WT's and 8 Raptors with very little time in between) I started getting very loopy... I never got that way from Magnum ever... :)

When it's cooler out, there is more friction, so they don't need to trim it as much, or at all.

Can you imagine if Magnum ever got a full repaint job? It would need sanded to get rid of the rust, then the fresh paint would make it run wll beyond what it has ever. The trains and bearings are finally worn in, and the only variable would be the new surface... Magnum would fly!! I remember when the Big Bad Bird got its repaint, it ran better than ever...
What makes Magnum even better now with the addition of the light/no trims is the night rides. Usually during summer the soak city lights are on but now they are off. It's pretty much total darkness now :)
I wish that once the crews got used to the timing, and could hit interval consistantly that they would just keep the trim off. It makes it so much better of a ride, and even smooth in the turn around.

I don't think that is the real issue with the trims. Trimas have been on the ride since day 1. I may be wrong but I don't think so. It is smoother without the trims though.

Maybe some of our Magnum Alumni could shed some light on that.

Trims haven't been there since day 1. They were installed on top of the 3rd hill shortly after the '89 season started due to the stress on the track comming off the hill. It dipped down lower and was creating cracks on the track from the upstop brackets.

The trims remained on top of the hill for about 6 yrs, when they moved them to bottom of valley. If you ride toward front and look as you crest the hill, you will see where they used to be.

I agree that it is a wild ride without them, but agree that the way Magnum has been running lately, I don't complain.

Day one, a month after day one, you know what I mean. Regardless they are not there to hit Dispatch.

I doubt very much it ever had anything to do with stress. When the ride can vary ten seconds in length in one day, you need something to regulate the speed or you'd have setups all over the place.

I just hope it is run this way on closing weekend as well. That will be one helluva Friday night if so!

My memory is a bit hazy, but I somewhat recall work on the pretzel turn two consecutive years after the magnum opened? Anyway, if magnum is really moving, after a few wheel seat rides, the second half trims are welcome.

ya, the last couple times I went over to CP the trims were very thin, if any... it was GREAT!
The ejector seat at night with no brakes provides airtime unmatched by any other coaster. Pure bliss...2001 CoasterMania. 15 laps, no brakes, I had one of the best times ever on Magnum. And to top it off, Magnum Dan sat in the seat next to me for my last ride for the night.

Jeff, if it wasn't stress, why else would they have replaced all the track from the 3rd hill to pretzel for the 2nd season? That was the worst spot. You could see a lot of sparks shooting out from underneath it at night.

The sparks were caused by the lack of up-stop wheels, which undoubtedly caused a great deal of wear on the track. That aside, reprofiling that drop just prior to the pretzel would also require the reprofiling of at least the first half of the pretzel itself to ajust for the new height and bank. What I'm saying is that I doubt there was ever any risk of steel failure from "stress."

I didn't mean to make it sound like it was a life or death situation. :) The trims just took enough speed off to help. I remember how wild that part of the ride was! I was so thankful when they finally moved the trims to bottom of the valley.

I rode maggie about a month ago and the trims were just grabing. There was so much air time on the return that my legs hurt.
I LOVE THIS COASTER!
