I'm still really confused though... If they GTT needed a new roof and they removed it a season early to avoid those costs, why would they also remove the turnpike cars and move the dodgems just to plant grass and keep the area vacant for the whole season? I feel as though SOMETHING has to happen there this season.
Considering the former Turnpike Cars and Calypso area is highly visible from Cadillac Cars and Perimeter Road, the grass might have been planted for aesthetic purposes. Just because an attraction is removed, doesn't mean that area will be occupied by something new right away. Jungle Larry's sat vacant for a few years before Power Tower was constructed.
Calypso and Dodge Em would have been removed from the area as they are part of the new Wicked Twister Midway. I agree that it plausible that they decided to tear the theater down a year early due to conditions of the structure, I am not so sure how to explain turnpike cars removal though - it is the only one that is an outlier in the situation.
Bottom line though, I think some are reading way too much into the simple planting of grass. I would still say that one of the more likely scenarios is that they wanted to get all of the demolition work done during the off season so construction can start in the late summer/early fall. Grass is cheap to install, has low maintenance, and provides a much cleaner look for the next 4 months of the CP season. Without grass that entire area would produce massive dirt/dust clouds blowing around the park - I doubt many guests of CP would enjoy that.
Call me crazy, but I think the area that used to be Calypso will be a queue for one of the new rides that might be coming to the park in 2016. I can also see the new Dark ride going in where Turnpike Cars used to be. The rest of the land could be used for the proposed roller coaster for 2016/2017. That's my prediction.
