Lego Demon Drop

I know that the TOS frowns upon links to personal pages, but I think that you guys might like this. I do a lot of Lego building, and I recently finished a Lego model of a Demon Drop type ride that's fully automated using Mindstorms.

Take a look at it if you're interested.

Thats amazing, I didnt know you can do that much with Lego's. Anyway, Dude...Great work on that.

Well, if you look at the rest of the technic models I've made (click on the technic button at the top of the page) it'll show you the other amusement park rides I've made in the past. Most of them aren't really based on anything in particular. And I never know what my next project will be until the inspiration strikes :)

man that is amazing, all those things you have built. You will be rich someday with that kind of talent.
Dude you should market and sale this stuff. I would pay top dollar for a kit that allowed me to build stuff like this. Here is an inspiration for you build a model of Top Thrill Dragster and sell it to me. Name your price. You should also consider slapping a copyright on this stuff to protect your idea.

That's nuts. Very clever though in making it all work.

Now if you could've stopped it with magnets, that would've been cool. ;)

Naaah...the next trick is to advance the design to multiple-car operation...with a safety system. :)

To catch up with lots of questions:

Hoosierjockey: I'm a Mechanical Engineer working at NASA Glenn, I'm doing pretty good for myself already :)

Dragstercody: I do have a copyright on the main page (which I forgot to update, oops) but not on each individual page. I've also thought about kitting some of my smaller models (like the spiderbike on the ground page), but something like the Demon Drop in Lego could easily cost over $1000.

Jeff: One of the designs I'd used before I settled on the tank tread brake WAS using magnets! However, with the speed at which the car moves down the track, it wasn't nearly enough force to stop it.

RideMan: I've got an idea on how to incorporate two cars. I'm not sure if I can get the mindstorms bricks to communicate properly to make it work, though. There is some tweaking I'm thinking of doing to it. Stay tuned, I might be updating :) Anything more than that and I'd need another Mindstorms set, and at $200 a piece, that's not really an option :-/

TheOne001: This is my hobby, and I've been at it for 20 years. You can get pretty far with something when you stick with it for a while.

Thanks for all the great comments!

If you are really into the programing of the Mindstorms, look into upgrading you systems. Instead of a Minstorm CPU, check out the http://handyboard.com/ Hanyboard. You can use (slightly) modified connectors to connect to all the regular lego motors. It offers more types of sensors (buy your own at Radio Shack) at a cheaper price.

It uses a version of C to program called IC. http://handyboard.com/software/base.html IC is much more powerful and is worth checking out (IC also lets you program Mindstorms).

Anyway... one handyboard can do the job of 4 or 5 RCXs. So it can save you a lot of money. I can help you more by e-mail if you are interested.
