kellys island

i want to go to kellys island while im at the point in august, i was wondering if anyone knew of a shuttle to take you from the point to the dock where their boat is. And come back of course.

When I was working there back in the day the Rocket used to come to Cedar Point and pick people up, although you had to buy the ticket at the dock in Sandusky. But that was every bit of six years ago.

I tried to find the Rocket's website to link to you but I can't find it. :( Anyway, if you contact the boatline, they can better tell you about their routes and whatnot.

I know they have a Jet Express that now leaves from Sandusky to go to Put-in-Bay, but I don't know about anything that goes to Kelly's Island.

As the Jet Express web site shows, it does stop at Kelley's. You will need to call a cab to take you to the dock from CP, there is no shuttle. Not a big deal though, the cab ride is inexpensive.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

If you are over 21 skip Kelly's and head over to Put-In-Bay instead.

Put-In-Bay is the funniest Ohio "attraction" I've been to. My friends and I went last summer the day after we went to CP. It reminds me of the movie "Old School". The entire island is like a 10 or 20 year college reunion for fraternities and sororities. When half the boat was wasted at ten in the morning on the way there, we knew we were in for a long day. :)

Kelleys Island is a great place. It caters more towards families. There are a numbers of bars/restaurants, shops, the glacial grooves, a winery and golf cart rentals. There is more than enough to do if you go over for a day. Put-in-Bay tends to cater more to the bar crowd. They have more bars and shops. Either island is a good choice. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Put-in-Bay has gold cart rentals and caves also. They got this area where one cave is thats for kids to. There is a maze and a mini golf area for them. I never been to Kelly's but heard its nice but you cant go wrong with Put-in-Bay either.

I'm planning a camping trip to one of the Lake Erie Islands near Sandusky (Kelleys, South Bass, etc) this July, and was wondering if anyone out there might be able to offer some advice and input.

We're camping in a tent, and would like to have a rustic setting (see also: trees) with electric sites. Kelleys Island seems to be fairly rustic, however all of their electric sites seem to have asphalt pads to accommodate RVs - this is obviously something we'd like to avoid, as tent campers. South Bass Island has only 10 electric sites, which seems to have 2 downsides - availability and proximity to other campers. We'd rather not be pitching our tent 10' from someone's picnic table. :)

Does anyone have any experience camping at any of these locations? Also, are there other campgrounds in the area which offer heavily wooded environments and electric sites, near Sandusky?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT #1: I didn't realize this thread was in the "General" forum, having searched for it via the fantabulous new search feature. I would have started a new one in the "Trip Planning" forum had I known.

EDIT #2: A big thanks to the PB Gods for moving this thread. :)

Kelleys Island is less commercial than South Bass Island. There are numerous preserves and nature trails which belong to the State of Ohio and the Cleveland Natural History Museum. I believe camping is limited to the State Park. According to their website there are some non-electric camp sites. Most sites are concrete or asphalt. Some are located just above the beach which is on the north side of the island. The others are slightly farther inland.

I've never camped at the State Park, though I've begoing to Kelleys since the 60's. It is known more for it's natural features, birdwatching, butterflies and the Glacial Grooves. There are a few bars restaurants and shops too.

Call me dense, but how the hell do you get an RV on an island?!

Ferry.

By the way there are two ice cream stands on Kelleys Island that serve Tofts Ice Cream. Tofts is also sold in at least one of the grocery stores.

Hmm, that's a pretty big ferry to take RV's over.

I thought so as well. But, according to their site, cars, RV's & campers are all allowed on.

Brandon

The ferry line has boats that hold up to 35 vehicles including RV's, boats and large delivery trucks, not as large as a semi though.
