I agree with what Cartwright said. The really busy part of the season is July and the first two weeks of August until the 8PM closes come back.
Holiday weekend crowds are hard to predict. It certainly isn't likely to be walk on city, but sometimes I think they hype things up with promotions so much (free/discounted admission for military and their families, cook outs, fireworks, etc) that every assumes it will be mobbed and they stay home. I've been there memorial days, labor days and 4th of Julys that have been surprisingly not busy. It's just hard to predict. With these midnight closes, a lot of times the park doesn't really fill up until late afternoon so you can still do a bunch in the morning if you get there at a decent time.

Other than Saturdays, June is always like this. The CP summer season, for me, is always broken up into two halves, "before July 4th" and "after July 4th." The crowds always start out slow, and after the 4th the place just gets mobbed until the 8pm close weeks return at the end of August.
This is interesting. I have always experienced low crowds in July. Granted I go on week days but I have never seen the park very busy in July.

This is just anecdotal, but I usually find July crowds to be manageable. I haven't gone on July 4th before, so I can't speak for that. But usually most of July Sunday's are decent. The weeks I usually avoid are the last week of July and first 2 weeks of August. I've found those weeks to be a zoo in the past.

About holidays like the 4th. Just look at the calendar and see when it falls. The day of the week absolutely determines when and if the park will be busy. This year the holiday is on Monday. So most folks have Monday off and if they take vacation days for visits to places like CP it will be that week, not the one before. That information serves to explain why last week was "dead" and next week will be considerably busier. I think...
