Jobs for college grad??

Well, I've got a situation I'm trying to figure out and I need some help. I will be graduating from college in November (yay!) and of course I'm looking for jobs now. But, as some of you may know, the job market is not the best right now....especially where I am. So, I've always wanted to work at CP, but it never worked out for me because of school (went year round). I'd love to still consider working there in 2004 if nothing permanent comes up before then and this may be my last chance to do so! So, I have some questions and I'm hoping maybe some of you can shed a little light on this for me. I've been reading this board for a while now and it seems to be really helpful! Anyway, here are my questions......

What jobs at CP might you recommend for someone out of college? I'd love something where I could actually get some valuable job skills to use in the future... (I've only worked retail and my degree is in Business Admin, so anything "office-y" would be ideal, I think, but you all would know best.)

Is there any sort of medical insurance available while you are working at CP? Even something you have the option of buying separately? I will need to take care of this because mine will run out after graduation.....

Are there ever any possibilities of being hired for year-round positions? How does all that work?

That's all I can think of at the moment... I'm probably forgetting something! Anyway, thanks in advance for any replies. Oh-- I would love to chat with any CP employees (past, present, or future!) on AOL--my id is Alysabeth8099

Thanks :)

I am actually wondering about this myself. I will be graduationg this Spring and I have always wanted to work at CP also. It would be nice for me as well if I could get some degree-related experience (mine is in Computer Science) even though I know that might not be possible considering what my degree is. Thanks for any helpful advice you can give.

The only advice I can offer on this is to give human resources a call and speak with them about what you'd like to do. I know that the silver tags/management work year round up there, but as far as what's available in each department and how you get started in that department HR can tell you what's available for each department and who to contact to get things set up.

I'm sure there is someone else on here that might be able to answer your questions better than me but this is the only advice I can offer for now. I hope the two of you can find a good year round position with CP as they are very fun to work for you'll have a blast. As a former CP employee I wish you both good luck and if you get a position enjoy yourselves and have fun. ;-)

Hi Melissa! Thanks for the reply. I guess I should've specified--I'm not looking to start with a year-round position. I actually want to start with a seasonal job and wondered, of those positions, which might be the best if I wanted to gain some "degree-related" experience. I was just curious about the year-round positions for after my seasonal job was up, that's all. Mainly becaue I never hear anyone talk about those! Anyway, I really appreciate your reply and aplogize for not being more specific in my original post! Thanks a lot :)
Hi there :) CP usually promotes from inside the company, so I don't think it is too probable to be hired right away for a full-time, year-round position. (Although I can't say whether or not it's impossible).

You could start off in a seasonal position (they have office-type positions available) but you wouldn't get insurance benefits of any kind. You could work your way up to being a manager, but I don't know how long it would take - possibly several years. CP is a better place for people who are currently in college, because of the seasonal nature of the job. I think if you want a steady, full-time job with benefits right now, CP isn't the best place to look. But if you really want to work there, then go ahead and apply.

If you go to cedarpoint.com, under the employement section they have a list of all the positions. Under Miscellaneous there are some positions that deal with office work. Also, since you'll have a degree, maybe you'll be able to start a little higher on the job chain, I don't know. Also, like Melissa said, calling Human Resources and telling them about your situation might help. Good luck :)

Hi Cat,

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid I gave the wrong impression with my original post--I really *want* (would love, in fact!) to take a seasonal job and I realize it's not likely I would get hired into a year-round position right away. That's fine with me. I was just curious what types of seasonal jobs might be best suited to that from people who have worked at CP before. I'm sorry I wasn't more clear! I don't want to give the impression that I would expect to get that when I've never worked there before...curiousity was just getting the best of me! hehe I have looked at the CP website and saw some jobs that I think may be good possibilities, but just wanted some "insider" opinions. Thanks for the reply--appreciate it! :)

For office-y positions, I would recommend the following:

Accounting/Cash Control. Hours can kind of suck because they count money after the park closes...for obvious reasons.

Accommodations, Front Desk Clerk or Reservations. (If you can stand it there are a few positions called Night Auditor that pay well. As a graduate you might be of interest to Accommodations). There are a couple of perks with the job, too.

As an older/more mature seasonal you might have the chance to work your way into a Front Office Manager position if you start out as a clerk.) This would look good on a resume.

Personnel has a few clerk positions available. There isn't anything glamorous about the jobs but they look for people that can start well before the park opens and stay as long as possible.

There is no way to get benefits if you are not full-time. As stated earlier, the liklihood of getting a full-time position at Cedar Point isn't high. A lot of seasonals who have worked at the park for years vie for the few positions that open up. It is nearly impossible to get into Operations full-time unless you have a proven track record at the park.

I might be able to provide you more info outside of the forums.
