iPods at the Point!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jeff.

I still use a Windows machine for RCT2, and for some things, but am otherwise a Mac Addict. Seriously, the Mac, and Cedar Point are two things I am addicted to. I have even brought my Mac to the Point! (though not into the park).

Thanks for all the advice, as I didn't even think of how bad of a safety hazard using an iPod on a ride would be. Now time to keep saving my money (May I please violate TOS to post a link to stuff I am selling on eBay;)?). I'm about a third of the way there!

I guess I'll take the other side of the Mac lovefest. I've used Macs off and on since the 1980's. We currently have two Macs in our office which I am, ironically, charged to maintain and support. I don't buy into the hype in regards to the superiority that Macs supposedly have over PCs. Everyone has their preferences, though.

I know it's not cool or trendy to say it, but I prefer XP over anything that's out there.

But there's no way in hell you can or should be allowed to listen while riding.

Thank you Jeff.. This agreeing thing has to stop.. ;)

Counter-point to Walt...

At home I have a nice Apple G4.
At work I am stuck with a Windows XP machine, which by the end of any given day, I'm usually ready to defenestrate. Pity the only windows in my office are the ones on the @#$! computer.

I have to agree with Walt. In the course of my work, I need to work with Windows XP, Mac OS X and Linux. Of the three, I find Windows XP to be superior. Macs to me are not as intuitive and the old OS 8/9 need to sometimes manually increase memory allocation to a program was just terrible.

I have two XP machines at home in a small network and I am very pleased with the performance and stability of the machines. The best thing Apple has, in my opinion, is the iTunes music store!

I'm a Windows developer for a living... and I'd still be all-Mac if I could be.

Does that mean an OS X (xServe, or OS X server in general) version of your forum software is in the works?

BTW, according to a rumer I read, there will possibly be a version of Windows for developers (mainly the kernal) that will run on a PowerMac G5.

The rumer can be found here:

I've grown up using Windows computers, and like them just because I don't have much experience on Mac's. But, I try to use Mac's as much as possible while at school.

XP is the OS that Microsoft finally got right, but it still hangs on to a lot of old school crap. Longhorn... that's something to get excited about.

OS X has stuff in different places, but I find it generally easy to use, and certainly a lot more pretty than Windows.

The Macintosh world is the same way in many regards...OS-X, which still isn't finished, is where Apple finally got things mostly right. I do want to upgrade to X.3 so that I can finally be rid of the @#$! column view. But having used X.2 for more than a year now, I find it hard to imagine that people would still prefer to crash in OS-9 than work in OS-X. If you have only dealt with Macintoshes earlier than OS-X, you have a right to complain about them...but you need to be aware that OS-X is dramaticaly different.

*looks at the Mac Plus that still works but is more commonly used as a doorstop and agrees with Dave *

OS X is what convinced me! Best OS I have ever used, and it gets better with each version, unlike Windows, which started going down hill with xp. (Yes, I find xp to be the most annoying OS of all time. And if I say something is annoying, it really is, because I am one of the most annoying people you will ever meet)!

Anyway, back on topic,
Tomorrow there is a raffle for an iPod Mini here at CWRU. If you are in the area, come join us, at Thwing Center, from 11 to 3! There will be free bottles of what we have to pay $2.50 for at the point, and chances to win other great prizes. Admission is free, so long as you can get there.

I will say that I did bring my laptop to the Point (My iBook) many times, and it was great for listening to music on the way there. I'd put the laptop in between the seats, push play on a Cedar Point playlist, and drive to the greatest place on Earth. Now if only the Point had 802.11b...

Wow, it sounds like some of you out there are way too attached to technology....

I think the main reason I don't like Mac's is because when I was forced to use them, I got tired of seeing that stupid exploding cannonball (or whatever it is). It's bad enough when a computer locks up on you, but when they have to cutsie it up with that stupid icon, it's all the more aggrivating. Windows 2000 is the way to go. It does everything XP does and is extremely stable.

Also, seeing how I use both AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max on a daily basis at work (both Windows based programs) without any problems at all, I don't see the benefits of using a Mac.

.....remember kids...VERB, it's what you do.

Jeff's avatar
Well if you don't see any benefit, then there must not be any at all!

I just think it's interesting how many geeks hate Macintoshes today because they couldn't stand some Quadra running MacOS 7.1 15 years ago. To put that into perspective, it would be a little like an Apple user like me complaining that I can't stand Windows because Windows 2.0 crashed a lot and didn't do much on the IBM PS/2-50 that I used to use.

(Why ANYBODY would have used Windows back then is a mystery, as Windows at that time was barely even a program selector...meanwhile MacOS System 7 was a pretty advanced OS, having finally caught up to the Lisa Office System 7/7...)

As for me, I dislike Windows because I dislike Windows XP, especially compared with OS-X. That is, at least, a fair comparison.

--Dave Althoff, Jr.

I couldn't have put it any better, RideMan.

The main reason I even got interested in getting a Mac was OS X. Anyone who knows anything about the history of Apple, knows that Macs sucked, for the most part, when Steve Jobs was absent from the company.

Since his return, Apple has again surpassed Microsoft, and is introducing great products.

I always thought the opposite, since it's so popular to hate Microsoft.

My experience with OS X does nothing to change my mind. It's not a bad OS, I just think XP is better. I don't buy into the myths (performance, graphics, etc.) that are often common in this debate.

Hmm...i'm an architect and I use AutoCAD and 3dStudio MAX every day on a Windows 2000 PC, my home computer is a Windows XP computer and I'd STILL rather be using a Mac with OS X.

Premier was never in the picture for anyone serious about video editing. FCP, now that I've had a chance to play with it, basically ripped off everything from Avid, which still has superior media management.

I still haven't played with FCP. But didn't EVERYBODY basically rip everything off of Avid? The good thing about Avid systems is that they have great media management, and when they're running, they're bullet-proof. The bad thing is, they're the market leader and they know it, and they treat their customers accordingly. Avid is marginally easier to deal with than the phone company or Microsoft, but not by much.

Oh, and Avid is a big reason I went with a Mac for my home machine. At work, each Avid upgrade has meant throwing away bits of the PCs the program runs on...generally pieces that are part of the Apple-supplied hardware (1384 card and video card, for example.) Of course now I have the opposite problem...I want to upgrade my OS and can't do it because doing so will break my Avid...!
