Internet Question

I need to have my email in my room while I am working at CP but I'm not going to lug my computer around! So I was thinking of getting a Notebook computer or just internet access computers. What services (i.e.-AOL, MSN, Prodigy, etc.) of Internet are local call numbers up there? Anyone know or already have it? And how do the phones work? Do you have special codes to dial out? (In college we each have our own code so we get charged for our own calls, that's why I'm asking) And how do you connect to the internet with the codes? Thanks for any help!
I had brought my own computer up to CP for 4 years as I was working there..... there are local AOL numbers in the area..... that is what I used.... you don't have codes or anything to make phone calls... you can only make local calls or calling card calls or collect calls..... CP has a problem with as many employees they have trying to use phone lines at the same time.... sometimes it is hard to get a ling out.... if you live in the apartments there is only one phone line for all the people in the apartment (which could be as many as 16). If you are in a dorm with only 2-3 people in your room that isnt as bad as hogging the phone line within an apartment.... I found out that during the day was easier to get online as opposed to when the park was closing or shift changes..... CP does have options for people who live in the housing to use pay as you use computer stations.... and also in the new employee rec center there is phone lines that people who are on laptops can use in the quiet room.... which is nice!

Hope that helps!

Will the cable hook-ups support cable modems, or are there no providers in Sandusky?

No providers in Sandusky and CP gets a bulk rate. To allow cable modem access in one room would be next to impossible.

Seeing how you are not specificaly paying the cable bill, it would be FAR too much paperwork for them to bill you for access if it was availiable.

Do they offer cable internet service?
Nope... I don't think the providers out there have cable access yet.. It's mainly smaller ISP's out there.

Im not sure if your need for the internet is for communication reasons or out of addiction but here's the scoop.

As for bringing a PC up i dont suggest it, but i dont discourage it. I brought mine up the last few years and havent had a problem. But as I tell everyone who asks during interviews, you may want to wait to meet your roommates until you bring things of personal value. Not to say everyone isnt honest, but with 3000 college age employees in the dorms, your going to find a few bad apples.

As for the internet... Cedars has had internet machines in the lobby. A buck for 8 minutes etc...these machine are also in the commons lobby and in the rec center. I know AOL has access numbers in sandusky because thats what i use.

As for getting an outside line yes you dial 9

The catch is unlike normal phone companies not only will you encounter the normal dial up busy signals you also have to battle with getting an outside line. CP only has so many lines that can access outside numbers. If alot of people are calling out to family or friends, dont be suprised if the only time you can get an outside line is 2am. This also goes to say if everyone is dialing up for the internt, no one else can dial out to their family or friends.

Last year, unless you got up at 8am, there was no use trying to get on the Internet in your room. After about 10am I never could get a line out.

They added additional phone lines towards the end of the season, so it probably won't be quite as difficult as Dave describes. :)

Rob,

However they might not have all the lines turned on yet. But Meg is right, they might not turn them all on until the end of the season either!!

True... but I think the point of this thread should basically be... Goto the Sandusky Library... hehehe

You'll stand a better chance of getting online..

Actually the best deal, IN MY OPINION ;) , if you have a notebook, is to go down to Advanced Computer Connections (it's on the corner of Milan Road and Perkins Ave in the strip mall) and sign up for 3 months of service and then going over into the rec center and hooking up on the dedicated lines in the computer room. No dialing 9, no busy signals, just quiet internetting
