Up until the mid-90s, Cedar Point's principles were established, trained and reinforced through Four Cornerstones. Those were; Safety, Cleanliness, Service and Courtesy. Pretty standard yet important principles to be sure.
Then, a fifth cornerstone was added; Integrity. Such a great importance was placed on this fifth cornerstone that the corporate structure places the emphasis throughout the company, and supports it was statements like:
Cedar Fair Entertainment Company is firmly committed to the principles of honesty, integrity and fairness in all aspects of its business relationships with vendors, customers, employees, investors and others. Management of the company is thus committed to the highest standards of accuracy and accountability with regard to its financial reporting and internal controls, and expects the same of each of its employees.
(As pulled from the Cedar Fair website.)
Who was the individual that so firmly believed in this principle that he made sure to incorporate it into all aspects of the business?
CEO Dick Kinzel
"You can dream, create, design and build the most wonderful place in the world...but it requires people to make the dreams a reality."
-Walt Disney
"The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (Pub.L. 107-204, 116 Stat. 745, enacted July 30, 2002), also known as the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 and commonly called SOX or Sarbox, is a United States federal law enacted on July 30, 2002 in response to a number of major corporate and accounting scandals including those affecting Enron, Tyco International, Adelphia, Peregrine Systems and WorldCom."
I'm sure that the public decree of commitments to the "principles of honest, integrity, and fairness" are in direct response to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and are the fall out of the Enron and similar scandals. Cedar Fair is a publicly traded company...
And...I don't know how much integrity can be involved when one promotes his unqualified son to a significant position and a son-in-law to another position.
Either walk the walk and talk the talk...or don't.

Woah, what? I guess Im not aware of what youre talking about. Where did they get promoted at?
Promoter of fog.
The son-in-law is a VP and the son was recently appointed (annointed?) GM of Carowinds.

Ah, nepotism.
I thought he was all about hiring within? You know...the yogurt stand employee who works his/her way up the ranks...(isnt that Kinzel's story?).
Nepotism is highly unethical as far as I'm concerned.
But I don't exactly hold this guy in the highest regard anyway, so this doesn't really surprise me. But to respond to your post, this is not integrity.
Promoter of fog.
In a way, nepotism is promoting from within. :)
Ew.
:)
I would add that I would be most upset if I was the guy at Carowinds how actually deserved the job. I would be so out the door if something like this happened. How disrespectful to the other employees.
What's the "buzz" from their perspective?
Promoter of fog.
I remember reading several threads on this subject a couple weeks ago when this was an unconfirmed rumor. I thought it was pretty disturbing then...too bad it turned out to be true.
Integrity hmmm

Dick Kinsel's version of integrity
The question I have, is his son NOT the most qualified person for the job? Isn't disqualifying him because he is DK's son just as bad as disqualifying someone else because they aren't?
I agree it doesn't look good, but do we (the outsiders) have all the knowledge about who was up for the positions, or what corporate was looking for for these 2 positions?
Goodbye MrScott
John
Unless the qualifications and standards they are seeking in a General Manager have changed...SUBSTANTIALLY...he is not the most qualified for the job.
Heck, he isn't the most qualified in his family.
Most companies have nepotism policies for good reason. Let's say, oh...I don't know...I'll just make something up out of the blue...Bart does something that is grossly inappropriate, illegal, or unethical. When his father is the CEO of the company, who is actually going to report or otherwise confront the issue? Assuming that action does go unreported but is commonly known by others, what does that do to morale?

Kim Il-Sung had the same problem in North Korea. Out of 25 million North Koreans, it so happened that the very best possible successor he could pick was his own son. Talk about your dumb frickin' luck. Fortunately, he didn't get a whole lot of flack for it from the North Korean press. Most folks were pretty much okay with it. And look at the great job his son's been doing! You gotta love a dictator with a really nice scarf. That's what I always say.

Funny. Clever and funny.

As I understand it though, Kim Il-Sung was a HUGE Cubs fan. He chose his successor by having a Harry Caray impersonation contest. What're you gonna do when its your son that wins? His hands were tied as he had made a decree that the North Korean most like Harry Caray would succeed him.

This company hasn't had integrity for years. When you are in the park you can see if from the supervisors hitting on the employees they have working under them to the managers doing the same thing. Or you see the employees pick up cash on the midway or out of a ride and just put in the their pockets. This company just going down hill more and more.
