Intamin Restraints & Cedar Fair

I've noticed latley that some Intamin Accelerator coasters, outside of Cedar Fair, are starting to receive OTSR rather than lapbars. I was just wondering, does Cedar Fair choose to have lapbars installed in oppose to OTSR, or is that up to Intamin?

It seems that CP got theirs right before Intamin started the OTSR.

I don't think they really need OTSR's at all. Im sure if it was a saftey issue, they would change them.

The last Intamin Rocket that a Cedar Fair park bought was 3 years ago. Storm Runner was the first looping rocket coaster and it opened 2 years ago. I do not know why Kingda Ka has OTSR's.

^ I dont know why KindaKa has OTSR's either. Well it probly takes all of the thrill out of the KingdaKa anyway, I mean having the thrill of only a little lapbar and a seatbelt is just exhilerating! :)

I'm glad that TTD doesn't have them... for some reason the OTSRs on the Accelerators look very uncomfortable...

There are even OTSR on Stealth at Thorpe Park and that is basically a 200ft version of Kingda Ka. I would just be very dissapointed if Cedar Fair started using the OTSR. To my understanding, correct me if im wrong, OTSR arent needed on SOME coasters with inversions. They are there for the feeling of saftey for the GP.

I have rode storm runner and the otsr are not bad at all. In my
opinion the intamin rocket coasters now have them because
then the parks don't have to be bothered with the 1/2 inch
policy. More happy people that way.

I dont like using this as an example... but superloops the carnival ride does not have otsr's and it holds you in the loop. The reason I dont like using that is because so many have died on the ride, and carnival rides are not safe in my opinion. People just pick up bolts off the ground if they are missing one. But it doesnt have one on some models. Though on the newer ones there are.

^ The thing I do not like about those rides is that they really choke your stomach when you hang upside down.

I believe Kingda Ka has them because NJ mandated them. But, that might not be right becuase I was AMAZED that Nitro doesn't even have seatbelts. With the amount of air you get on that ride, if the restraint were to fail mechanically, you'd be dead without a seatbelt.

I know the OTSR are more accommodating to riders of larger sizes, but another reason is the fact that Intamin's t-bar style lapbars that are on Xcelerator, MF, and TTD have been labeled as unsafe following the accident on Superman: Ride of Steel a few years back. I think it's a lot of bull, but I'm guessing the parks have gone with OTSR's for they don't face any problems at all.

i rode Kinda Ka a few times, good ride i must say but not as good as TTD, and i thought the OTSR killed the ride. during the launch and going up and down the hill you don't even know they are there. but going up the small hill near the end of the ride, i think the OTSR takes ride of your air time. plus it doesnt help that the brakes start right at the top of that small hill, which also kills the air time.

and i do think that Jesrey has a law about it, i know that passed a law where no ride can be over 4 Gs

I don't think TTD ever goes above 2.5 g's throughout the entire course.

I don't know for sure, having never been on one with the OTSRs, but it appears to me that they hold you in more by your thighs like a lapbar. Maybe someone can confirm/deny this?

they do hold you by your thigh area, they feel a lil different tho then the lapbars on TTD. the bad part about them is that the shoulder part of them dont allow you to move around as much, and on Storm Runner at Hershey Park for example, if you put your arms up through the invertions, they can leave you with some nice bruises if you're not careful

I think it probably has something to do with the fact that Six Flags has had a bit of history with ride ops who don't quite grasp the concept of the Intamin lapbar needing to be down in order to work properly. OTSR's are slightly more idiot-proof.

The OTSR's on Stormrunner sit very high up off your shoulders and are very stiff.

I'm sure they made them that high so that it felt as though they weren't there. The comment about putting your arms up through the loops is true.

The launch on Stormrunner is pretty intense, I didn't see many people with their hands up on that and I wasn't about to attempt it. 0-72 in 2 seconds is a bit harder of an acceleration than 0-120 in 4.

Ride on, MrScott!

I worry about the OSTR's on Intamin rides because while waiting in line for storm runner, I watched a child slip out of the restraints and then get back in them before a ride attendant saw. This child met the height restrictions for the ride.

I think about this child every time I see an intamin ride with these restraints and I always worry that somewhere, sometime, someone will squeeze out during the ride. And there is nothing I can do about it. :(
