in the future. . .

Call me an idiot for asking this and I know we don't have to worry about it just quite yet, but is it possible to build a roller coaster over water? It wouldn't be able to be built far out because of the depth of the water; but maybe partially over shore and partially in the water?? I have no clue if this would even be possible or not so please don't attack me to bad for asking..lol thanks.
Well im not an expert, but it has to be possibale to build a coaster over water. i mean look at Iron Dragon and Mantis. Now, I think you mean out in Lake Erie, I would think it could be done. I know they have piers in North Carolina that go out inot the Ocean and survive hurricanes, so i would think it could be done.
I dunno bout that. Lake Erie is pretty deep and would require really long supports, plus the sandy bottom might cause it to sink a little. I'd think they could build it along the very shore of the peninsula, though.

I'm sure they can but i'm sure they won't.

Hehe well Lake Erie is only like 60 feet at its deepest. . .and I am sure there are plenty of bridges, etc., that have supports bigger than that. Anyhow. . .I remember last time this was asked, it's not like Cedar Point "owns" the lakes or has the right to build a roller coaster out into it. So, yes theoretically it could be done, but hmmmm probably not.

Real question is, would they spend the money required for such construction.

Doesn't CP have a couple of rides/coasters that go over water? Mine Ride, Iron Dragon, etc...

Yeah, it won't happen. Like LIVE ENTERTAINMENT was saying, CP only owns the land on the peninsula - it doesn't own Lake Erie. And even if they did, it wouldn't be anything like Mine Ride, Mantis, ID, TTD, etc. because the lagoon can be dammed and drained, while Lake Erie, I believe, cannot ;) .

This is an old topic that has been talked about way too much. I'm sure it is very possible to build over Lake Erie but Cedar Point probably won't. It would be very expensive because it would have to be able to endure the freezing and thawing of the water.

As far as Iron Dragon and coasters that run over the lagoon, those are different. They don't have to be able to withstand frozen water because the water is pumped out when the park closes.

Feel the Beat

Last time I checked there was water in the lagoon all winter.

It's not the freezing and thawing. Do you know how much force ice can apply if it shifts when it's frozen? It could easily move a support or two. The water in the lagoon is controlled, lake Erie is not. Rough weather, hig waves, etc can cause bad problems. Great idea, wrong body of water.

LIVE E, the maximum depth of Lake Erie is 210 feet, the average depth is 62 feet. That said, it would certainly be possible to build a coaster over the water. A good example of the type of construction that would need to be done can be found on the Rt 2 Sandusky Bay Bridge, or the towers for the high voltage lines that cross the bay at that same point. I don't see CP ever doing however, the cost would be much greater than a coaster on land, and there are probably legal issues that would get in the way.

At any rate, this HAS been discussed trillionly amounts.

I think CedarPoint owns a portion of the lakes...

I believe some of their first "thrill" rides were built in the lake. I think one of them was a ride called the Water Swing(or something like that). I thought there was another one but I can't remember the name of it.

Unfortunately, I doubt we will ever see another ride built in the lake.

Take a look at Edgewater Park in Cleveland, you can see what 1 winter storm can do to a structure built in the water where the old pier used to be.

I don't think they would chance the loss of a multi million dollar ride just to say they have one over the water.

Nana forget going in the water they should go underground. Yeah I know thats never gonna happen.

If they want to build on the lake, they would "create" land like they did for the causeway. The same way Cleveland Browns Stadium is built "on" Lake Erie.

...But I can't see the park doing anything like that anytime soon.

Thrilkill, The Water Toboggan was an early ride too I believe.
