I think they will keep Space Spiral!!!

The problem with those is sometimes you can't get the peeps off the ride...

It is still running though. To the best of my knowledge, it's the only coaster to be removed from Cedar Point that is still in opperation. Looks like it's in decent shape too.

Jumbo Jet at Dreamland in Belarus

Neat. I see it's no longer CP's trademark Red, but it still looks great. It kind of reminds me of back lot stunt coaster with all the circling in the tower.

I like the idea of the gyro tower, they should do that.

But I wonder, how come SS had such low ridership? It was a family ride that grandparents and at the same time infants could ride together, like paddlewheel was. I have seen that problem when i was there, no one, not even the families with kids, would be getting on it. I mean, a few people would, the line had like about 10 people, but I see people just walk right past it, and actually stand and watch Maxair, Twister, and Giant wheel instead. They get in line for GW, and DT when it was open. That whole midway seemed to ignore SS.

Really?

Lets see...

1. An 'Observation' ride with very poor visibility due to bad windows.

2. A Completely enclosed ride with no air conditioning in 90-105 temperatures.

3. Very inconsistent uptime.

4. half of the ride you are observing a parking lot.

What's not to love?

And poor placement. If all the reasons above were fixed, the ride would so great.

So in short, it had a bad reputation.

It's also one of those things where if you've done it once, you've done it a thousand times. It's a pretty appealing type of ride for CP first timers, but for returning guests it's nothing special. There are plenty other family rides with thrills that never get old, which is most likely why kids will ignore SS for DT, because DT has a much higher re-ride value than an observation tower.

In terms of poor placement, that wasn't the case when SS opened in 1965. Back then the back of the park ended at the Western Cruise ride, where Iron Dragon stands now.

why did they build it there in 1965? the parking lot was there too, back then.

When you think about it from a historical POV, you'd really have thought the site of Coasters/Paddlewheel Cafe would have been a more proper, central location for it.

If we do see a replacement, I see it being a gyro tower, because Intamin is honestly the only company I can find still making them. I doubt CP would put in a permanent tower, as much as I wouldn't mind the walking around on top aspect of things like the Eiffel Tower at KI. If anything, I would have modified the new entrance to have either a bridge observation deck between the tower, or something. I dunno.

Add observation decks to each of the support/inspection catwalks on Top Thrill Dragster.

The infrastructure is already in place, and I'd even pay an up charge for to go up a 400' observation deck.

Or make the first two levels free, and $5 to go up to the top for truly Awesome Views!!

I imagine the cost to relocate Space Spiral is so great, it would be cheaper just to construct a similar new ride. In fact, I wouldn't mind if the park decided to do that in a few years. Maybe even taller and close to the center of the park.

I think of WindSeeker as a Space Spiral replacement, to be honest.

Another upcharge "attraction"? That's exactly what everyone wants! ;)

Better yet, let everyone "up" for free, charge them to come down. :)

Except you can't take pictures on WS, which is a shame.

Yeah. For us, WindSeeker may be a replacement, but for the acrophobic Moms and Grandpas and such that don't want to ride like that, but would have ridden Space Spiral, it isn't.

So what say you all; is an observation tower a "must" for a park like Cedar Point?

As nice as it looks from above it would be a shame not to have a place to see it from. Sky Ride and the ferris wheel are the only places to do that now unless you count the tops of coasters and you can't take pictures from there.

And, kids under 52 inches can't ride the darn thing either.........

Well that makes one of us.

How tall did you need to be to ride Space Spiral again?!

Titandwedebil's avatar

If you're riding by yourself, 46 inches, but if you've got a parent with you there is no height requirement.

"46" or accompanied by a responsible person."

Guess it's to keep those rowdy kids from stirring up trouble on the ride. ;D
