Hi my name is Joe and I'm from California, I worked at 'then' Paramount's Great America during '01 while I was in high school. Things didn't end so well there, I was fired after working there for 3 years for playing with the midway games but I won't go into detail about that right now. I've always wanted to work at Cedar Point and finally got the chance during the summer of '05, it was the best summer of my life. The summer ended and I was looking forward to coming back at some point in the future (no pun intended). The worst thing that could happen happened to me, regarding my status at CP atleast...Cedar Fair purchased Paramount Parks! It didn't really occur to me that there would be a conflict until I tried to re-apply to CP last year but their website wouldn't let me process through.
I was invited back to work at CP after my summer in '05 since I left them in good standing but since the company's inquisition of Great America in '07, I suppose my records were combined. At first when I called human resources at CP, they really didn't have a definite answer for me so I thought it was still negotiable, they told me it's up to Great America to allow me to be re-hirable. After re-applying with GA and writing them a heartfelt letter why I wanted to work for the company again, I was denied. There have been rumors floating around the past couple of years that CF is planning to unload a few parks and GA is on the chopping block because of the whole 49er stadium issue they're having but I don't know how much longer I can patiently wait for that to just happen.
I'd really love to give it another shot and try again to work at CP next year, since I'm in my mid twenties, I feel it's my last chance to enjoy one last summer at the point until I move on to a more permanent career. I'm sure there must be some kind of loophole for a situation like this, if anyone can help ke or direct me to someone who can help me with my problem I would appreciate it and be in a debt of gratitude, thanks in advance.
If HR at Cedar Point has already told you that it's up to Great America, then there isn't much you can do but try and call Great America and work things out. If they don't, for whatever reason, allow you to work then I guess that's all you can do.
I don't think posting here will help you much though.
I was told I would need the manager from the department I was working for to release my no rehire status. And while I will never say never, it seems that almost impossible to get that done. But I have heard that it has happened I think once or twice. But both times involved health issues. If you were fired for an actual reason, chances are not good. They take that stuff seriously. That's just my opinion of course. I'm not on the inside. But it's hard to get a job when the computer wont take your SS number at all. It's like walking up to an ex girlfriend or boyfriend and saying, " I've changed." When in fact most don't change, they just learn what they can't get away with and eventually slip again.
Plus with the way the job market is, they have a much bigger applicant pool to pick from.

I have never worked at any amusement park but can you just go to cedar point directly to apply for your job? You have a better chance of getting your job there than going online. It sounds like a big misunderstanding with your job loss. Do not apply in the game department. They will definitely not let you back then. It was in 2001. If they are thriving for job positions in February, see if you can go strait to park operations. If you seem like a friendly well clean cut person, they might overrule CA GA desition. Also say how you worked at CP previously. Experience! I do not know what you did but after 9 years they just might forget about it. I really DO NOT KNOW how the job policies are.

And what's a lawyer going to do? If you've been fired with cause, there isn't much they can do. You don't have a right to work for a company, especially when you used to work for them and were fired for violating company policies.

I appreciate the replies, even the brutally honest ones. It gives me a better idea what to expect, not that I expect a different outcome. Regardless, I'm going to try and apply again next year, I would atleast like to talk to my old managers about it. Technically, i was fired by Paramount's, not Cedar Fair. I was in good standing with CF when I left, my managers wanted me back the following year I worked at CP...but I do realize that Paramounts is CF now. I have one last shot next year and that's if Cedar Fair decides to sell Great America to the 49ers, which will most likely be decided soon after the city of Santa Clara votes this march whether or not to build a new stadium on GA's parking lot, and CF has been releasing statements of frustration regarding that situation. If GA is no longer part of the Cedar Fair family, I'm hoping that my PGA record stays with GA and my CP record stays with CF.
^ I think it will be in the system anyways. Paramount had the record not GA. Cedar Fair will still have access to it if GA isn't on the chain.
