I don't mind sleeping in a nostalgic looking place. I do mind sleeping with cockroaches or in filth. I didn't see either at Maples.
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone has differing needs/desires in a hotel. It's just a nice budget choice thats not camping.
Yea. I showed it to my parents, and they seem interested in it. I'm really glad you mentioned it Ben. Thanks a lot! I would have NEVER discovered it otherwise.

So, you only didn't like it because of the look and the class! haha. Thats pretty bad if you're judging it just on looks.
What else are you supposed to judge a hotel on???
Anyway, You may absolutely love the place, I have a friend who swears by it. Maybe it's a boy thing?
I hope your trip goes well, you'll have to let us know what your family thinks of the Maples when you get back!

I'm sorry Vanessa. I didn't mean to be rude. I'm just saying, you have to judge a hotel by how clean it is, how comfortable, how friendly, how accomadating it is. Things like that. Not just by what the comforter looks like! haha
And thank you for wishing my trip well. I appreciate that very much. And I will certainly let you all know how my trip went when I return and what I thought of the Maples. I might even write a trip report if you all are lucky! ;)

Maybe I'm missing something. Has it been renovated recently? I haven't seen it since 2001.

OK so I'm thinking about this Maples thing... I think people like it the same reason people enjoy seeing the country by rail, or going camping... It would be a very nostalgic experience. Wood panneling, etc. It's just not my taste at all, but it very well could be yours.
My ideal hotel would be brand new, in a great location, and packed full of amenities. <--- think corporate chain... I KNOW I KNOW!
NEW is just my preference though, it gives me the illusion of clean :)
BTW, I come from a single income family... my daddy is a crane operator, so I really do not have unreasonable standards... The Maples is still in the bottom 3 of hotels I've been in.

Ok, well then thats totally understandable! haha.
I can see where you are coming from in liking big, fancy, new hotels! haha. I recently went to Biloxi, Mississippi and was in a swanky hotel/casino. It was so awesome. Something I'd NEVER be able to afford, but really cool. Just thinkin about staying somewhere like that is amazing! haha.
But I can totally go for the rustic stay too. I went to Cedar Point last Summer with my youth group and we stayed at a campground not too far from the park, and the cabins, were literally like tool sheds! haha. It was so bad, but it was kinda fun.
And once again, I'm sorry for sounding rude to you. That wasn't at all my intention, and by no means did I intend to refer to you as being needy and needing fancy hotels! haha

I just wanted a comfortable place to sleep for a reasonable price for me and my friend. Talking to the owner for awhile and seeing how nice she was was a total plus. :)
Last hotel I stayed at in Sandusky was the Microtel on Rye Beach Road (it's 5-10 miles down Cleveland Rd from CP). I was impressed with the rooms - they were big, clean, the mattresses were better than what you usually get in Sandusky, and the staff was nice.
The one thing to be aware of is that this hotel is close to the train tracks so you hear trains a lot. I am sort of used to this though since I lived at CP for three years and you can hear them from the dorms too.
This place also had a fairly nice continental breakfast.
I think the quality of hotel you get here is better than most of the others in Sandusky (let's face it - the majority of them are overpriced crapholes that wouldn't exist if CP wasn't bringing in 3 million each year) and I think they are forced to have pretty low prices because of the train thing.

Oh, I noticed that the Maples is pretty close to the train tracks too. That might annoy my parents, but it won't bother me, cause at the end of June I went on a mission trip with my youth group to Biloxi, Mississippi, and the church we stayed at had train track RIGHT out back, and there was a train every 15 minutes! haha. It was annoying at first, but we were there for a week, so we got used to it.

Bodes, you put hit the nail on the head "RUSTIC" is the best one word description I can imagine for the Maples.

When I went on May 25 and 26, we stayed at the Breakers and it was really nice. The only thing is we didn't have a microwave, but other than that it was a great stay and I had a great view of TTD out of my window
Staying On Point is better. Staying at Lighthouse Point is best. But, not everyone can afford to do so.
If you can work it into your budget, stay On Point. If you choose LHP, you can save a ton by doing your own cooking/sandwitches/snackies, rather than eating out all of the time.

When I saw that the newest post was a MrScott post, I said to myself: "Here comes an advertisement for Lighthouse Point".
You're so predictable, MrScott. :)
Well unfortunately I won't be staying OnPoint, so its pretty much final that I will be checking out The Maples.
I'm hoping that my trip will be on Tuesday and Wednesday, but Tuesday is looking like a storm maybe. POSSIBLEY one on Wednesday, but Wednesday looks nicer than Tuesday. I'm kinda bummed about the weather.
Oh well, it still has time to improve.

Dont worry about the rain, when I went in June it Stormed for about 2 hours around 5pm,we just hung out in the arcade and waited out the rain. Then went back to a near empty park, the longest wait was only about 15-20 minutes and that was for dragster. We had a great time in those last two hours and got in lots and lots of rides.
