How many people attended Cedar Point...

I was at CP the Saturday of July 16th weekend. (I can't remember the exact date but it was Saturday)

Anyways, I was just curious if it was a "typical" Saturday or not. I know Saturdays are the busiest but if it was a typical Saturday... I am very impressed!!! We didn't wait in line very long for anything. It was extremely hot so I didn't know if maybe it scared alot off or not.

We were going to plan to come back the weekend of the boat show because the kids are off school on Friday but were nervous about the crowds. this last trip in July was a last minute thing... but if the crowds are the same, then we may just keep our original plans.

Is there a way to find out the number of people who attended on that day and other days to compare???

On a busy day I believe they get somewhere around 30,000 to 40,000 people. The park is considered packed when it gets over 45,000.

Someone might need to clarify this though.

Cedar Point's attendance last year was 3.1 million. Spread out over a 146 day operating season, that's 21,232.88 guests a day, on average. The very busiest days, however, are in the high 50,000 range to the very low 60,000. These days are only seen once in a while, but they do happen.

yeah, but is there a way to find out how many people attended on the 16th and then how many came last year during the boat show?

I am sure that the park keeps track on a daily basis but do they offer this information to employees or to the public?

This information is not given to the public and only certain seasonal employees are told. Those who are told are in charge of staffing so they can add or minus staff when needed. All the park can do is guess! The only thing the park knows in advance of any day is how many pre-sold tickets for a specific date are sold for outings.

Daily attendance is not released publicly or to employees. I think more people know what Project 2007 is than could tell you daily attendance numbers. :)

Interesting thought but I think more know the attendance not including the marketing department getting things ready for the announcement for 2007.

In rides you don't really need to know since it takes the same amount of staff to operate most of the rides. But in Foods we check the numbers (attendance) all the time. Bigger the crowd, more staff needed to serve everyone. It's a needed tool to keep a proper profit margin against hourly wages.

I read on TPOL that the attendance, especially the first two Saturdays in August, can hit 70,000 or more.

This is due to families taking a last-minute or procrastinated vacation before their children go back to school.

I still can't believe that the park doesn't count how many people come through the gates on a daily basis whether it be from the turnstiles or by the number of tickets collected. Oh well... so much for my strategy.

The park does keep track on a daily basis (they'd be stupid not to). Those numbers just aren't released to the public.

My question is: How do they do it? It would simply not be accurate to just go by the turnstyles. My initial thought was that they went by scanned tickets and passes, but that brought up the question of the printed receipt tickets sold right at the park.

Since i don't believe they scan for re-entry (arm stamp) into the park, the turnstlyes are your answer. While I don't know the system they use for numbers they use for the media, I do know they track attendance. The imoprtant number to me was in-park attendance. I'm only guessing that that number comes from taking the total entered the park minus the total exited the park. While the number could be off by a thousand (employees going out the marina gate, guests who go around the turnstlyes, etc.). It would be accurate enough to make the choices made based on attendance.

more- I know someone is going to say what choices. How much staff at various locations in the park. Also attendance has impact on some locations opening and closing. This in no way includes rides!

Im sure its not an exact count. But its close.

In the same way we do counts at the rides... They are close, but there will always be morons who spin the turnstiles as many times as possible when walking through them, or the people who just jump over the turnstiles...

It just seems like that by the time you added up all the times a turnstyle would screw up your attendance, that it would be way off in the end. I personally have left the park and re-entered more than 5 times in one day. Now tell me that that wouldn't have thrown off the seasonal attendance if it were just figured on turnstyles.

I don't know if I see your point in subtracting the total that exited the park from those that entered... that would tell you how many people are currently in the park, but I'm looking for how the figure the numbers on the seasonal basis. That scenario wouldn't work; theoretically you'd always get 0.

You are correct DBCP, and that's why I said I don't know how they get the media-public number.

But since everyone that comes in the park for the first time on any given day IS SCANNED. Except those who buy a one day ticket at the gate. But you can get that number from the register.They could get a total number from that.

I just never had access to it.

This is just a guess ...

A season pass only gets scanned once per day, so you can get an accurate count there. All turnstiles (except season pass / re-entry) are only used once per day by each person, so you can get a good count there. If a person comes in on a re-entry, they're directed to one specific turnstile, also used by season passholders. If you ignore the counts from that turnstile, you could get an pretty accurate number?

Did that make sense? That might not be the way they do it, but I suppose it could work.

That was my thinking Walt. The re-entry's are directed to a specific turnstyle, so that should work. Just count the others, add in season pass numbers and you should be ok.
