I wear a 36 and I had the belt all the way extended but I was wearing a coat and sweatshirt which may have taken 2-3 inches.

The belt does go across your thighs, not your waist.

The problem with using waist measurements is that the seatbelt doesn't just go across your waist. It goes across your thighs. A person with a 42 inch waist could have a much smaller, or much larger diamater around their thighs.
Thanks Vanessa. I can't believe how long I have been saying the same thing. It isn't my waist that keeps me from riding. While my waist isn't exactly small, but smaller that some other posters in this thread, I have thick thighs and find it hard to fasten the belt on these rides because of this. It would help if the belt fastened more in the center, just to make it easier to cram the belt together. Sometimes it is difficult to get a hold of the small section of belt that holds the buckle since my large thighs are in the way, not that I can't fasten the belt, but it is hard to get a hold of.

I couldn't fit into WT last Spring. And the guy told me not to feel bad because a lot of people with broad shoulders and a big upper body can't and he had to turn down at leadt 20 people that day already. I was at least 4 inches short of connecting that belt.
It does suck to be big when it comes to Amusement Parks. And while I don't see too many obese people at Cedar Point, I do think its unfair that some people can't fit into the rides.
Even on the magnum and gemini, my knees are right up against the car wall. And I don't even come close to fitting into the Mine Ride.
AND THIS IS JUST FROM BEING BIG, NOT FAT, JUST A BIGGER PERSON.

From the edge of the seat to the end of the buckle the fully-extended belt is 28" long. I am not certain how high the other end buckle is above the edge of the seat.
To determine if you will fit, sit on a rigid chair. Measure from the top of the seat, across your *lap*, down to the top of the seat on the other side. If that distance is less than or equal to 28", you should have no trouble at all. If that distance is greater than 28", then you're not guaranteed not to fit, but you should probably try the test seat before waiting in line.
I took my measurement using the test seat. For reference, I have a 38" waist, I'm about 45" around the thighs, and I fit with no trouble at all.

What was your measurement on the chair test.

I measured the length of the adjustable end of the seat belt on the test seat, from the point where it crosses the edge of the seat to the end of the buckle at full extension and found the belt to be 28" long.
Because of a loose attachment bolt on the test seat (I don't have three hands), I was not able to measure the distance between the edge of the seat and the non-adjustable buckle end, however, the buckle end is very close to the edge of the seat.

Dave,
What I really ment to ask is if you ever did the chair mesurement you mentioned above to see how you measure out?
