The Super Himalaja came to CP in 1970 and was originally located behind the new Dodgem where the CP Cinema was eventually built. (See postcard in kylepark's reference ) It, like the Calypso, the Schwabinchen, and the Bayern Curve had it's original carnival flash with lots of scenery and tons of lights. It looked the same when it was moved over by the Space Spiral, where it sat in a row with the Matterhorn and the Jumbo Jet. (This was the same location of a previous similar ride, the Zugspitze) When it was moved to the Gemini Midway the flash went away and the top was replaced with that tudor style facade and i believe that's when the spelling change occured.
I commented on the last day this season to a Calypso ride op about the slow deterioration of that ride's appearance, saying something like there wasn't much left except the base and the cars. He reminded me the sign was still there! True enough. It was still spinning away, but I can't imagine the old gal will be with us much longer.
i think the ride should stay, it doesnt take up too much room, its just cozy in there behind power tower, it is a good ride for those who dont like the coasters. i live in windsor, ON and we're right across from detroit. every summer we have the "Freedom Fest" come to town with its fun carnival rides and there is one called The Polar Express they usually bring, its the same as Himalaya except a portable version.
We'll miss you MrScott and Pete
