Himalaya

Did any one notice that it's missing on the midway-go to the TDD Cam.

It appears that Super Himalaya has been stripped down; I don't seem to remember this as being a ride they regularly stripped down, to this degree, to repair annualy, but I could be wrong. If they aren't making repairs, perhaps Super Himalaya has been removed and/or moved for good.

Regardless, this is fun.

It gets stripped down. I have a photos somewhere, not posted online.

I don't see how you can see that it is missing by looking at the TTD camera. It's on the other side of the Corkscrew building which would make it kind of obscured, particularly at that resolution.

What you can tell from that shot is that the canvas roof has been removed from the building. As that makes it easier to get equipment in to take the cars off, that isn't surprising.

That ride needs some flashy signage like Dodgem received this year. It has all those lights on the ride, but the exterior of the structure is rather bland.

It used to have some flashy props and graphics at one time:

I remember asking Walt about Himalaya's original appearance. I believe Calypso was heavily decorated as well.

Those old spectaculars had literally every inch covered in lights. We used to say that the lights consumed as much power as the motors.

Calypso was heavily decorated, I have a few pictures in my stock as well from back when it was located actually on the main midway, complete with covers on the cars. If I ever scan them in I'll share them.

Speaking of off-season ride maintenance. I can remember going through the park with Janis in '96 during the winter and the Witches Wheel was stored with cars removed and the ride's "arm" half-way up and locked. Why was that? Is that normally how the WW is kept in the off-season?

Here are a couple of photos that were on the old site:

IMO, I think Calypso is better off without all the "theme".

loved the lights and center piece from days gone by on the calypso. does anyone remember when himalaya had a "tunnel" of sorts on the back part of the ride. and what about the super jets that were located where the calypso is now? anyone remember?

Anyone know what year the spelling changed from "himalaja" to ... however it's spelled now?

kylepark's avatar

That's another mystery as well. When did the spelling change?

- Uncle Jay

I remember the Super Jets. As a kid I would watch them from across Sandusky Bay and wish I was over at CP. When the wind blows just right you can still hear the train's whistle blowing. When I hear that, I'm transported back to the late 70's.... *** Edited 11/15/2004 6:50:22 PM UTC by tambo***

When swab was operating years ago, it had covers and many more lights than it had in its final years.

I really miss the lights/scenery that was on calypso. It really does add to the ride imo.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I'm not sure when the spelling changed from Himalaja, but are we sure that it is still the same machine? Maybe the theming is different because the ride was replaced with a newer one.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Uh, the cams seem to be off. There is an archived photo\photo of last refresh in its place, through raw image and directally on the site. I know sometimes they use a recient picture on the site durring some of the night and sometimes in the offseason. But the raw line (http://cedarpoint.com/_cpcam/cam2_00001.jpg) still updates. Very intresting... Intresting indeed.

That Super Himalaya/Himalaja has to be the original. Compare:
http://www.pointbuzz.com/gallery/1619.jpg to http://www.pointbuzz.com/gallery/692.jpg I think the theming was lost/removed over the years due to maintenance reasons. The decorations couldn't have deteriorated that bad, unless CP kept more assembled portions of their flat rides outside during the off season.

Remember too that the Himalaya has moved at least twice - from the Oceana Midway to the Gemini Midway to it's current location. The theming most likely was a casualty of these moves as well.
