Heartline-Roll on Maverick

CP rush's avatar

^that's what I thought too, something about the trains needing replaced every few years.

First rollback=opening weekend '09

I know they said "stress on the trains", but if there was stress on the trains then you have to figure that that would be transfered over to the people riding in one way or another.

You would be figuring wrong though, because the rotation through the twist is like any other rotation. The forces are greater on the outside of the turn, just as they are on a carousel. Your body on those twists is at the center of rotation, while the wheels are on the outside.

I'm an idiot. It is called a heartline roll for a reason. The idea being that the person stays in the middle without any forces on them at all so that they almost feel weightless.

I should have known that, I don't know how I forgot something so simple. Thanks Jeff.

You are absolutely incorrect. Never happened. That, and you clearly don't value your job for posting complete nonsense.

Jeff got to it first, but I wanted to point out that before the pieces are even manufactured, computer models and simulations are run hundreds of times before a single piece of track is ever fabricated. This is why the removal of the heartline roll is a rare instance, it goes to show (not that they actually do this) that computer models cannot be soley relied on and are only accurate to a certain degree. There obviously still needs to be live testing, and usually most issues (found in live runs) can be corrected with minor adjustments. In this case, the long-term wear and tear on the trains was just too much to allow for the roll to stay. Personally, and I could be wrong, but I think you'd be going way too fast to ever fully enjoy that element anyways.

I do value my job... Back in 2007, I read something that said that. If I ever find it again I will post it. I knew about the stress on the trains, I had read other things...

--------

Edit - I looked for it and found someone else talking about it. They mentioned it was on screamscape (back in 07)...

I can tell you from seeing it in real life, it would've been over so fast that you could miss it if you blinked.

I agree with Jeff. But, I blame Schuyler for posting a video on youtube. :)

ask me for my facebook.

^^ Aah, Screamscape. Of course!

Here's another view of the track before it was removed. Anyone remember if the POV video of Maverick had the ROLL in it? http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/226/cedarpointmay122007open.jpg

^Look at that water! I haven't seen it so clear since it opened! It always looks like Lake Erie water when I see it.

Cause it is Lake Erie/Sandusky Bay water.:)

And they never did a POV with the roll. The pov we know was done after or slightly before it opened I believe.

I know it looked soo cool! But I love the ride the way it is! Especially the launch out of the tunnel!

Not entirely true.

The CGI POV that was released in the press packet DID include the roll.

^Anyone have that video to share? Also, does anyone have testing videos of the train going through the roll?

Honestly, I had almost forgotten about Maverick's heartline roll, until I saw this topic.

IIRC, didn't Sanders take the first ride, and when he got off, declared that he would never allow anyone else to ride Maverick in its current condition (with the roll)?

The only declaration Sanders has made is how delicious his Chicken is...;)

Sandor from Intamin is rumored to be the only person to ride Maverick with the heartline roll, however it was announced that it was the stress on the trains that was the reason for the removal of the element...

^Lol. Well, I know that is what was announced...but I doubt the park would inform public that they are making changes to the ride 'so that the forces won't kill you'. ;)

Well yea but I'm referring to an actual realtime pov.:)

As best I can tell, Sandor was the only guy to ride it, and not being a human accelerometer, would not be qualified to say if the ride was suitable for humans. The forces on the human body were easy enough to predict, and that roll put almost none on the body. It was the heavy wear and tear on the wheels, axles and bearings that were the problem.
