Don't go on Columbus Day weekend or the final weekend. Go on the weekends before that in Sept.
I went on a Sunday in October before Columbus Day, and walked on everything except for the major rides which were less than a 1 hour wait. Maverick was like 1 1/4 hr. Terrific crowds.
But yeah, don't go on Columbus Day. I was at entrance at Dragster in 07 on CD, and the line was clear past the stands there. Ridiculous. There were nearly wall to wall people just walking around!
