Gold Dorms...

I kind of mentioned this in my introduction, but I was just wondering if I made a topic with this as the title, I might get more response to this specific issue, lol. I was just wondering a few things.

I just wanted to hear from the people in the world who actually prefer the gold dorms, and why...

For those of you who live in college dorms, are the showers REALLY that bad? lol, along with everything else people tend to say is bad about them... I mean, I'm not trying to compare them with commons or anything, because I know commons is "better"... but when the price is half as much, I'd just like to compare it to what I'm used to, which is college dorms, and college bathrooms and showers.

Also, if I brought my own a/c... how much does it cost to have it installed, and how much is it extra per month to have it running?

I too have recently gotten my contract and realized that you can't have microwaves... is there any decent kitchen communal kitchen facility in gold? or will I be forced to not have even an option to skip the caf for one meal? lol.

As for the social aspect of it... does it really exclude you that much? I mean, I would think that it would be better... because then if you wanted to socialize you could go where it's happening... but if you want to sleep or rest or relax or something, then you'd have somplace to do that. No?

Anything else that people have to say about gold, real tips (I've heard all the sarcastic ones, lol), etc, I appreciate it lots! :)

And as a side note (I should learn soon not to have side notes, lol)... I've heard from several people who have made over $6k for the summer... but I look at the topic that actually asks people how much they made, and I see a lot that are less than $2000, lol... I am not one to spend my money on things I don't need to... so as a ride op, working lots of hours, for 4 months... is it likely I can make over $6k?

agh, that's a lot of questions, lol, sorry... Just trying to make sure I know what to expect with the dorm, and make sure I am prepared for any "problem" which is typical... I think that's it, lol.

Thanks!!! -Michelle ~:)

As a male I never lived in gold dorms but I have been in them. No, I don't think they are that bad. Better than Cedars and lots of guys live in Cedars.

The showers get cleaned by housing and, generally speaking, girls aren't quite as messy as guys. Convenience and price are the big selling points. You can roll out of bed and get to work easily. It is cheaper.

You might find yourself going to more ESD events b/c you are on the peninsula. Ride nights, movies on the beach, etc are easier to get to if you are already there.

How much time will you really spend in your room anyway? Not that much. You need a bed, someplace to sleep. There is a convenient employee laundrymat near Gold and the "costuming" laundry is right there too.

Are you walking distance to Louie's? No. If that is important to you then think twice.

I don't know how much it costs these days to run your a/c. Call personnel or housing and they can tell you.

I thought Gold myself was nice and easy access to work. You don't have to worry about the causeway being backed up and leaving early for work and finding a parking space. If you don't have a car gold if perfect. I stayed in Gold for two summers.

Gold has vending machines and mircowaves available. It's an outside area in between the two dorms under a roof with picinc tables.

Feel free to email or im me at anytime if you would like more info about anything, i've been working at CP for sereval years now. It's in my profile..

Gold is a dump! Spiders, muffleheads, parknoise and most importantly the place is an absolute firetrap. The dorm must be 80 yrs old so the construction is all wood. Think about it; some drunk idiot falls asleep with a cigarette and whoosh! Hey I have fallen asleep with a smoke before and im lucky I did not burn my butt up!

Actually its not that noisy when i lived there..just a little as I know.

The muffleheads are everywhere no matter what. Not just at gold dorms. Their all over the park and off point. There are spiders everywhere also. I've have a bunch in Bayside more than what I ever since at Gold. Gold isn't that noisey, try to get a room with your window facing in toward the court yard or facing the Hotel Breakers..

A fire trap yet it has surived 80 years without any structual damage. A bit of a contradiction there. People get muffleheads in their rooms at Breakers and Sandcastle and they pay big bucks there!
Well the one night that I spent in the Old dorms a long time ago was enough. There are alot of wooden buildings that have been standing for hundreds of years..But it does not mean they are safe! I know they have smoke alarms to tell you that you are about to die a horrible death in a raging fire!...I'm sorry I just get the willys when I think of that place...I would rather stay in the Cedars. My apartment room in the commons looked like Hunter S. Thompson had a week long binge there on a consistent basis. The commons apartments are not really a fire resistant structure either.

Hey Wassup Everyone,

It is my first summer, and I have heard all these online horror stories about on point housing and was told to stray towards Commons. But I won't have a car and plus need to save money so should I consider on point? I mean I want to be able to get to work and also be able to get into and hang out at the park a lot without hassel. I won't have a car. Should I still not go anywhere near these dorms? Which are more secure from for a labtop? What is better on point Cedars or Gold?

p.s. I'm currently writing a paper on the Hotel del Coronado, a wooden structure can be fire safe.........

Well Keith,
As far as what's better on-point. You don't really have a choice.. hehe

Cedars is male only and Gold is female only. They are NOT as bad as people say.

I was just wondering if there is free internet access in each individual room?!?!

The Cedars has an oder all its own, just be sure to read up on what to bring. Oh yea, never walk around barefoot in any of the dorms or dorm bathrooms, get some flip flops or something.
Internet access is not free, but it is really affordable. If you already have your own ISP (such as AOL), you can bring your own computer and hook it up by way of a dial-up connection in your own room if you like. (If you use AOL under your parents, though, you won't be able to be online at the same time since AOL doesn't allow that). Since there is only one phone connection per apartment/room though (at least as far as I know), you will either need a really, really long phone line (to extend down to your room) and/or really, really trustworthy roommates (if you leave it in the living room).

You can also rent a computer and pay for Internet access through a local company in Sandusky. My Polish roommates did this last summer and we all pitched in to help pay for it so we could all use the computer. The computer was old, and getting a line out was the usual CP competition, but if you used it in the morning or during the day there was never a problem.

You can use the pay-per-minute option at the kiosks in the main office building of Commons, and I believe there are some like this in Cedars also. There is also Internet access in the rec center (at Commons) and the Sandusky Library, which is only about a half-hour's walk away (taking the bus or driving there is, of course, shorter).

I spent an evening with a female there one time, the scream of the park guests and the Cork Screw were enough! I hate bugs as well even though the commons apartments had plenty I appreciated not having all the darn noise from the park. I would play in the park after work however everyday that I could. I always brought a change of clothes or a windbreaker to hide my FT uni. In retrospect I am glad that I did it that way...

Most people are at work doing park hours so your already awake. Now if you work 3rd shift in Group Utilty then I would stay off point so you can sleep during the day..

I lived in Gold and I didn't think it was that bad. My mom on the other hand thought that it looked like a crack house! Me and my roommate had an AC window unit. We were going to pay for installation, but that was $25! The way the windows are and the was the AC was, we just kinda "set it in there" and had no problems. We never had to pay anything extra for the AC unit because we didn't tell them we had it. The bathrooms are a little scary, and yes there are a lot of muffleheads in there, but it wasn't all that bad.
