LOL I think they just do it like at the beginning of the year or something... I don't think they replace them weekly... They might, but that'd be a lot of maintanance hours... and a lot of ladder time... specially for the ones near the axis.

I remember seering a souvineer Cedar Point fun facts poster and it metioned how many light bulbs are replaced on the wheel on a weekly basis, which was a lot.

At one point they might have replaced them on a weekly basis... but not anymore. I'm sure they replace them at the beginning of the season, but there aren't too many people concernd about the Giant Wheel's burnt out lights... it still looks vwery pretty. :)

When it was first installed GE furnished a complete set of lamps for it in exchange for using it in print ads and TV commercials. All 32,608 of them. The Schwarzcopf spectaculars all had a lot of lights on them. There was a crew assigned a cherry picker that was busy just about every night. They were jokingly called "the screwing crew" by maintenace.
Aestethically I liked it in the former location sans the laser screen, however, as the actual ride, I enjoy it on the beach.

I guarantee the only 'screw' crew at Cedar Point is the one for Corkscrew/super himalaya... now anyway.

Going back to the earlier comments, I think that one of the main reasons they stayed away from the wooden boardwalk style coaster is because of Blue Streak right across the midway. But yeah, if they could put a wood coaster there, then that would be great, even if it's a little smaller, maybe about 1.5X the Beastie

Someone better explain what's going on here...or...there will be a lot of explaining to do!

Whereever it is located, it is now and always will be to me the scariest ride in the park. Something about being stopped at the top, and looking up at bolts........yikes, give me the coasters anyday.
You'd be surprised how many people SCREAM to get off the ride, kids, grown men....

Sucks, 'cause if you e-stop it'll actually take longer to get them off...

Does it still use the motor/generator set to power the gear motors? As I recall originally the E stop button shut everything down, locking up the drive motors and killing the M/G. This required restarting the M/G, which could take a couple of minutes. Sometimes it wouldn't load up and they'd have to call the electricians to reset the relays. Yeah, it could be a pain.
I don't know details, but I know that in 1997 the Giant Wheel got a new control system from Consign. I've noticed some changes on it since then...I don't know if it got yet another new system, or if they just did some updates.

I think the drive motors have been replaced, or at the very least they are now fan-cooled instead of having all that air-conditioning ductwork blowing on them. I think that changed when the wheel moved.

Or I might have this all wrong... :)

One thing that was nice about Giant Wheel being where Millennium Force now sits was you got a great view of the park and the surrounding city of lake erie. Now that we have Millennium Force. That is better than having Giant Wheel there. Don't get me wrong Giant Wheel is a nice relaxing ride, but it's in a better spot now. You can get great pictures where Giant Wheel sits now.

The wheel does have a newer computer system now, I'm not exactly sure when it acquired that either in 1997, or when it moved to it's location now.

We only use e-stop for extreme situations, like improper balancing and in those situations usually e-stop just slows down the wheel. It still drifts back and forth for awhile until it finds a natural place to 'stop'. Generally, this would be where the most weight is.

By the way, there is no picture taking, video recording, or basketballs allowed on the Giant Wheel. ;)

One more question.........In CP style, was Giant Wheel the highest and largest of it's kind in 1972?

------------------
http://www.youngstown2010.com/

Not only was it not the highest nor largest in 1972, it is not even remotely close to the size of the first Ferris Wheel.

The first Ferris Wheel debuted at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. It had 36 cars that were each about the size of a bus, and each car could seat 40 riders and hold another 20 standing.

The Wheel was 264 feet high, and the cost 50 cents for a ride. To put that in 21st century terms, 50 cents in 1893 is the equivalent of about ten bucks today.

Yeah, but the first ferris wheel was dismantled not to long after the Worlds Fair.
