FRS Radio / GPS

Hi,

I was wondering, I heard that Security monitors a FRS channel for emergency purposes only, and I never saw anything posted at the park, but I am trying to find out what channel that is, I own a Garmin GPS Rino GPS/FRS&FMRS radio, and would like to somehow coordinate a channel with a subaudible tone that others coaster enthuiest may want to share as a common frequency, I don't know if any standard was set up, but I know how wonderful these devices are and expecially having the GPS locator that will beam yours to other Garmin Rhino users, I hope to try it out this year.

Isn't, "Hey, I'm at the Magnum entrance," adequate for finding other people?

I know, but I thought since FRS radios are popular at parks, Im sure people would use them and would like to test new technologies and thought maybe people had stacked out a frequency for members fo clubs. That si what Im really after... Thanks, Ron

Have you heard the traffic on those things on a busy day? When CP is stacked with 30,000+ people I find them to be very nearly useless.

The FRS radios with security codes aren't too bad, even at a place like WDW. The ones without, however, are practically useless in any sort of park anywhere.

LOL! All I got was a cell phone.... but it'll work a lot better than the FRS radios do!

Even with the tones though, it doesn't stop people from stomping all over you on the same channel when you're trying to talk.

Rob- I hope you're laughing.

and you are all correct, they're impossible to use even if they have a weather channel.

You have NO idea Jon.. hehehe

Those childrens band radios are simply paperweights in the CP rf environment. I have tried to use them numerous times and ened up teasing other people over the radio rather than keeping track of wife/kids.

Leave them at home;one less junky thing to tote!

I can shout farther than that thing will transmit at CP on a busy day! Lol.

A friend of ours had one of those radios knocked out of her fanny pack on the Magnum, she got it back and it still worked.
I've really never had a problem/seen people have problems with them in busy parks. As long as you get a real one, that is.

Those radios have about 500 mw of power which is sufficient for a half mile or so in a benign rf environment. They transmit on 49Mhz so they are mostly line of sight. Some models have 15 or 20 channels all shared!

They do not work at CP with any constistency. In other words I would not bet my life on contacting my family in an emergency.

If you want coms that will work and be relatively consistent;get your amature radio license and use a 2 meter handheld. These little radios can transmit up to 5 miles LOS and up to 300 miles thru repeaters! The liscence is not very hard to get and the radios are pretty cheap (150$). I have had mine since 1976 so I have some experience with RF and all of the joys of handheld radios. The FRS is a joke that the government played on the public!

I cant fathom buying a transistorized paperweight with a built in gps(I love my GPS). Contrary to what the reader of this thinks I am not flaming anyone;just stating an opion based on a quarter century of real world experience

FRS radios are great for kids playing in the woods or other types of rurual activities but in an urban environment they are essentially useless; unless you want to talk dirty to little girls and families at CP!

FRS has a purpose, it's not a joke on anyone. I've used them at volleyball tournaments in huge convention centers, on the road between cars, at camp grounds, etc. We used them in sports venues for video shoots as well. I had a pair before they became trendy Best Buy items and had no problem talking to my wife from Mean Streak to the main gate.

In the end, it's a pointless debate anyway, since kids have wireless phones that do the job, and they don't need a license for those.

Living out in the boonies as I do I find FRS very handy. Hunting, Camping, Travelling, Shopping, Jogging or Mt. Biking they work very well.

Take them to a Nascar Race or an Amusement Park and you can Forget it.

Thats right Virginia, I am Santa Claus.

Indeed I will use FRS for aforementioned isolated activities but the fact remains that they are virtually useless at CP or any other emvironment that is filled with RF! Try to use one next to the WT and all you will get is static due to the 60hz power lines that produce 440 volts and lord knows how many amps! And the RF it produces does not stay confined to the wires!
Actually.. it's not 60hz power being used to fire the LIMS.
