I am sure there were once round, two seat cabins on Sky Ride before I started going to the park in the 70s. But there were also square shaped ones on the sky ride at the same time frontier lift was in operation.
If they did put the cabins from FL on SR, they did not replace the old round ones.
^
That is my recollection as well having been at CP a number of times in 1980 and 81. I've never seen round carriers on a ride like that (amusement park or ski area) so I would have remembered them if I did. Also, I just found a park souvenir map I have from back then and it shows square cabins (although since it's a drawing, there's no guarantee of accuracy).

Larry - I'm not trying to be mean, but you don't need to quote someone directly above (or even 2-3 posts above) you. On here, the generally accepted method of "replying" if the post is recent, is to put a caret (^) in front of your post. So, in this instance, if you were replying to Spit (like you did), you would put one caret in front of your post. If you were replying to Ralph, you would put two carets (^^) in front of your post.
Again, I'm not trying to be an a$$. Just trying to let you know about the rules of the site.
^now that you mention it, I remember the 'earthy' colors on the sky ride, before they were repainted. (notice my cool use of the ^ ;) )
I found 'proof' that the sky ride cabins were square before the shift to the FL cabins.

^^^^^ (notice how I quickly get with the program :-) )
While I have no proof, I am dubious that Sky Ride originally ran with the two-person carriers and then switched to four-person carriers. That means it was initially engineered for the four-person carriers although purchased with the smaller carriers. While I am aware of a few ski lifts purchased that way with the intent of upgrading the carriers when business demanded it, it's almost always done as part of reusing used carriers and delaying purchasing the "right" ones for the new lift until later.
The only other possibility is that over the years, evolving engineering standards resulted in what was only good enough for two-person carriers when built being OK for larger carriers (as a general rule, lifts like this are very over-engineered).
I could swear I've seen pictures of small round cabins on Sky Ride before, but I have no clue where. I just looked through a book I have that had two old pictures of Sky Ride. The cabins in the pictures look smaller, and it appears they are each holding two people, but it's at too much of a distance to see if they are round or square.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
Larry, I can tell you from personal experience that the Sky Ride had two person carriers during the early and mid 60's. For proof look here. The upper left corner of the 1966 brochure has a picture of the Sky Ride with the round carriers. I think the 4 person carriers appeared around 1967 or 1968.
And yes, the Frontier Lift carriers were placed on the Sky Ride when the Frontier Lift closed. As someone said, the cars were painted in the Frontier Lift colors for a few years after they were placed on Sky Ride.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
I too miss Frontier lift. I remember riding it when I was probably 5 or 6yrs old. (28 now). The view was amazing on it. Some people earlier on this mentioned bringing it back. I think that would be pointless. It served as the primary way into Frontier town before the Gemini midway and Frontier Trail was built. Now that you can walk it, no point. Not to mention trying to get around ID, Mantis, and Millie.
R.I.P. MrScott... You're greatly missed!!
Well if you look at the link below it looks like they have the old skyride gondolas still at the park but they are all blue and white. Also if you look at the same area of the map you can the the train car that is at maverick now.

Those are more than likely the cabins from Giant Wheel. Definatly not Sky Ride cars.
If you go over to the Giant Wheel, all the cabins are on it, so they can't be for that. Some of the Sky Ride cabins are on the ground next to Dodgem, and some are in the stations (in some views).
Water is involved
