Free Fall

So since both CP and GL are so close together what are the chances of one of them removing their Free Fall ride? Since CP has Power Tower they don't realy need Deamon Drop, they could replace it with a Crazy Mouse or something. However, Mr. Hyde maybe new, but it also has a tragic past as well.

I don't see CP removing Demon Drop, the ride sensation is very different from Power Tower.

They will take out Hydes before they even think about taking out Deamon Drop.

Yeah Mr. Hyde's is plagued with problems. Compared to DD, it is open a lot less and I see it requiring a lot more work.
Well, I think (but my memory may be faulty) Mr. Hyde's is the oldest Freefall ride operating. That's the one that was at Six Flags Great America, got moved to Rocky Point Park, then was purchased by Geauga Lake.

When the ride was installed at Geauga, a third party had to design a completely new control system for it because most of the original system was missing, incomplete, or non-functional.

I think it's also the only Freefall that has suffered an accident caused by mechanical failure.

I can see Mr. Hyde coming out and a SS Drop Tower coming in.

Dave,

Wasn't the first Intamin first-generation freefall installed at Six Flags Over Georgia? If not, do you remember when they got theirs?

What Happen on MR.Hydes someone Died? WHen? WHy? HOW?
It was a non-fatal accident.

Read all about it from Jared Costanza's amusement ride accidents site.

Hyde's is not even opening till Memorial Day weekend. It's end is near.

Thanks for the link RideMan. Is it safe to assume that Demon Drop has those anti rollback mechanisms installed?

Yes it does.

Actually, the anti-rollback devices were original equipment. After the Great America incident, the number of anti-rollback devices used on the Freefall elevator was significantly increased.

And yes, they've all got 'em. :)

Ok Dave, I may have asked you this one before, maybe not.

Along the Demon Drop tower, near each set of anti-rollbacks, on either side, there is a large panel of sheet metal. Any idea what the purpose of those are. Nobody I talked to at CP could give me a reason. I'm guessing that they are there to block either the wind or rain.

It's just always been one of those things that is a mystery to me, and I don't like things being a mystery to me. ;)

Dave-

After the accident on The Edge, weren't new blocking rules applied on the 1st gens? IIRC when the car at the top was dropped the next car began its acent but now that doesn't happen until the previous car begins its return trip to the station?

You are asking me questions about a ride I haven't had a chance to study in extreme detail... :)

I thought the blocking on Demon Drop was such that the car at the bottom would move back into the lift shaft as the car at the top locked into the drop track, and would rise immediately. The point being to make sure that there isn't a second car in the lift shaft until the car at the top *can't* come back to the lift.

More or less what you said, in practice, but a little more mechanically precise.

Oh, and Richie...I don't even remember the panels you are talking about. :)

Dave.... yep! You're right. The blocks we have are the station, the lift, the horizontal transfer, the free fall, the reverse drive, and the slope lift.

As for the anti-rollback devices... yes we have them. There is one about every 6 or 8 feet... don't know for sure haven't measured. We test them every morning and any time we come up after rain.

I was watching Demon Drop in line yesterday. The car begins to ascend the tower right as the car ahead of it comes to the part where the car tilts upwards again.

Liebevision, I saw you yesterday. Now I can say I saw someone from this site. I was on the ride around 12 o'clock.

i was wondering is demon drop closed often because when i was there last year i didn't see it running or was i just not looking close enough?
Well from what i've seen and read Intamin makes rides that are dangerous independable and cause major ocntroversy. DOnt you think cedar point would learn and go with another compnay to make its next coaster
