Extending the season

Today's Sandusky Register has a special section regarding area communities, where they are now, and what's in store for the future. I noticed one interesting tidbit in a story about Cedar Point.

Dick Kinzel said, "We will always be on the cutting edge of the thrill ride industry. But our main focus is to evolve into more of a family resort - adding more hotels and trying to appeal to the family"

He also added that Cedar Point is trying to find a way to bring in year-round revenue, saying that one of the park's goals is to extend the season as much as possible, and to eventually become a year-round resort. Kinzel offered no specifics, but said it was possible for Cedar Point to add a destination similar to Great Bear Lodge.

John Hildebrandt, vice president of marketing, added, "There is an interest from the marketplace and from within Cedar Point to extend the season. We will have to be creative and efficient, but I think we'll be successful in finding ways."

The article also went on to talk about the roller coaster debate with SFMM, highlights from the last decade, and challenges facing Cedar Point in the future (space and long lines).

Gemini, what was the article's title? I looked all over the Sandusky Register website and could not find it.

That's why I posted so much info ... it's not on their web site. It was a special section inside today's newspaper.

Extending the season would serve to alleviate these hideous withdrawal symptoms and the anticipation of Opening Day.

That would be a good thing.

May 18th just can't come soon enough.

Fear the Mullet!

But its not like you will be able to ride the coasters because it would be too cold. They would have to have some major indoor and outdoor activities, kind of like Wheels Inn in Canada. Its a resort with spas, pools, and all types of sports. There are also 3 pools a huge arcade room and even an indoor amusement park. Its small but cool. Everything is indoors so thats why people come to escape the winter.

You are the Weakest Link, Goodbye.

Hmmm I wonder if the addition of the Ice Show means the possibility of having another venue to use during the winter to have a show. Knott's does have a really great Christmas ice show, and the director of the show this summer directs 2 hour Christmas shows for the Schulz family in Santa Rosa every year. I do know that both the Palace (Lil's) and Centennial have heat. Maybe they could do something like Hershey does, where it is free to get into the park, and you pay a small price for the entertainment and attractions that are available. I think it costs like $5.00 to see one of their 2 indoor shows, and a few dollars to ride some of the rides that are open.

Like we have all heard before....enclose Cedar Point in a huge dome to make it warm in the winter-time! ;)

If Cedar Point wants ideas on how to extend the season, I have 7 words:

Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, and Christmas.

Roller coasters don't need to run in the winter to have fun. "Off-season" Cedar Point can be different from the Cedar Point we enjoy during the summer.

*Imitating the sound of the Cedar Point Dome* Hello! (echos) hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello.....

Anyways, I think it's neat they are thinking of ways to make CP a year round resort. I'd visit, just to see CP in the winter.

~I'm One Of Those Voices Inside Your Head~

I posted a thread about this in the middle of the winter, I think I'm psychic!! Hallo, my name is Miss Cleo!
DT could run all winter! Although the ride is known for having air conditioning in the summer, I somewhat doubt that the building is sufficiently heated in the cold winter months.
It would be pretty easyto add though, becuase all they have to do is add a boiler & a forced air mechnanism. they already have all the ducting. lol could you imagine how many problems they would have with snow! they have enough with rain during the season, I could just imagine snow, that would really add to the Alaska effect !@!
A very interesting article to say the least.

I recall a year when CP was open for some "christmas" events. I think they had all the coasters lit and other xmas lights up. I don't know if it was very well attended, tho. But, think about how neat it would be to have xmas theme in Frontier Town? And isn't the Ballroom still usable?

Yeah it was either in 1994 or 1995. I heard that it wasn't very successful so they didn't try it afterwards. Wasn't there some kind of sleigh ride to the back of the park?
The ballroom was just repainted last summer. I believe work was also done on the floor.
