Event Notice: Sept. 19

Just thought I would give everyone here a heads up on an event this season that I am almost 100% sure is a first for Cedar Point, as well as what is sure to be a very busy day at the park. I was rather surprised to find this out today, so I don't blame you if you don't believe me.

In what I believe is a first for the Point, a major concert is going to make a stop at Cedar Point on September 19. Its called PointFest, and is headlined by TobyMac and Family Force 5, two major names in the Christian music scene. Having been to quite a few TobyMac concerts over the past few years, his name alone on a concert will easily draw a crowd of 20-30k or more. Family Force 5 is a quickly rising group that is easily capable of drawing a few more thousand. Between the two groups is the ability to draw a very sizable crowd to the Point, so be warned, it will more than likely be a VERY busy day.

Just thought I'd give everyone here a heads up on a special event. Also, can anyone confirm my thought that this is the first major concert (modern) at the Point?

EDIT: Almost forgot the link for the event, tickets go on sale on Feb. 27 if you're interested.

Three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40, and a hammer. Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't, WD-40 if it doesn't move and should, and the hammer as the last resort.

FF5 is a pretty neat band. I'm pretty surprised that they'll be at the Point. I'm sure it'll be a busy day; too bad I won't be able to go...

I have no clue who those singers are but it sounds like a busy day at CP. I see CP is taking some advice from his CF relatives. KI and KD had these for a while now.

Wait isnt that the first week of Halloweekends, and the boat show?

Also if it is, how in the world is christian rock and Halloween supposed to mix? There are going to be some pissed off radical righters who truck their family up and see "satanic images" all over the park...

Never heard of them...but if they draw in crowds then I can only imagine how busy it will be.

You'd actually probably be shocked by the kind of people (usually teens) that those groups tend to gather. The best way to describe them would be to use the word 'emo'...most of which have no problem whatsoever with halloween.

^So you're telling me there will be no vocal minority of born again Christian families who think Harry Potter promotes satanic worship and who actively try every year to squash Halloween festivities at local schools?

I think this is the first concert since the hay day of the Ball room during the late 30s and into the 40s. I think they will put them on the stage on the Iron Dragon midway where they have the haloweekends concert.

Witches Wheel has a 54 inch height requirement, I don't care if your child rode Dragster, Magnum or, Millenium, they are not tall enough for this one!

Emo? TobyMac? Yeah right. If the upbeat rap/rock hybrid genre that TobyMac does is drawing an "emo" crowd, then I've been going to completely different concerts for the past few years. Maybe you should, you know, try to understand a topic you decide to talk about. Just a thought.

As for your question, Touchdown, I'm sure there will be some complaining, but you probably won't notice it, as these groups aren't exactly drawing the typical "conservative Christian" crowd that you're talking about. Most conservative Christians don't like artists like TobyMac or FF5.

Now on to the performance area (man, this is getting to be exhausting ;) ), that dinky little stage and setup they use for the Dapper Combo is a baby compared to the rig that TobyMac typically rolls out at concerts. It will probably take place on that part of the midway, though. The trussing setup for the light show and screen will finally get some real heavy use, and a lot more will probably be set up. All I know is that I would hate to be doing crowd control that night!

^he's just saying that the christian rock crowd dresses like emo kids. From what I can tell, its a pretty valid description.

I'll give you that much, though thankfully that trend is starting to go away pretty quickly. Not to mention I really can't stand the "emo" stereotype.

This is the last thing Cedar Point needs for Halloweekends is "conservative Christians" going to the point. There better not be any complaints because CP is making huge steps in the right direction with Halloweekends and it better not get ruined. That is going to stink that the crowd will be that big for the first Halloweekends, but good for the park. I am sure no problems will arrise though, and if they do i am sure that the "enthuiasts" will outnumber any complaints about Halloweekends. It's not like this is bible park. I like the concert idea just wish it was a different genre of music. I have heard that the crowd was huge for a similar event at Kings Island last year.

I think they may hold it in the ballroom above the arcade on the main midway.

^No one is really going to care because everyone knows a Saturday during Halloweekends=Crowded. I doubt this will have much if any effect on Friday or Sunday crowds that week.

I've worked plenty of "Nights of Joy" at Disney, and all I will say is you will be surprised at who shows up at some of these events. On more than one occasion I found myself scratching my head thinking "Christian?".

JuggaLotus's avatar

I don't doubt the validity of this, but it doesn't make sense from a park perspective. You use events like this to draw crowds on days that would otherwise be dead (see May-early June) not to draw crowds to an event that already draws its own crowds.

True, but it is the first of 7 HW weekends. Are the crowds reliably large that early during HW? I don't recall.

Count me in as someone who has never heard of these people. I'm also a bit intrigued about the whole Christian crowd meeting Halloweekends thing. Although as others have stated, I suspect the whack jobs are too conservative to go for things like Christian rock.

The first two weekends of Halloweekends have generally been the lightest weekends in terms of crowds, but I still wonder how they're going to work this thing? Will the park be open to anyone during the concert, or is this going to be treated as some kind of private event? I'll be interesting to see how they make that work, since they don't have any dedicated section of the park just for concerts.
