Employment Questions

I applied for the first time on January 3rd. I'm still a senior in high school but I'm 18 now and eligible to work there. I've had a season pass for at least the past 10 years and working here has been something I have always wanted to do. I just have a couple of questions...

1. I chose ride host, game host, and server, (in that order) how likely am I to get hired? I have experience in a restaurant environment, but I really want to be a ride host.

2. I put my availability for the beginning of June until around the 20th of August. I'm shipping out for bootcamp for the Navy on September 4th and wanted to be able to spend the last few weeks at home.

3. I see a lot of posts saying the average work week is 50+ hours... Do you get overtime? Also, I live more than 30 miles away and was wondering how nice the housing is.

Thanks, and hopefully you'll see me working there this summer!

1. I would guess that your chances would be pretty good at getting hired, especially since you've applied so early on in the season.

2. Just talk to your manager and explain your reasoning for needing the specific availability dates.

3. No overtime, it's considered seasonal employment. The housing isn't the best, but it's not completely awful either. The only time you'll really be in housing is to sleep, the rest of the time, chances are you'll be out with your crew or working.

2011: Raptor
2012: Raptor, Sky Ride and Wicked Twister
2013: Co-Team Leader of Sky Ride
2014: Supervisor of Slingshot/Skyscraper

Is my availability similar to what most employees put to work for the summer? I didn't know if it was too short to be considered for the job.

Most employees will be processing-in in May. The park opens the second weekend in May. But having your start date in June probably won't hurt your chances. People are processing-in throughout the whole summer. A lot of people process out near the End of August, so you are good there.

Also, I already bought a platinum season pass for 2013, not thinking about that I was going to work there this summer. If I'm hired, will they allow me to return it or am I stuck with it? Or can it be put under someone else's name? And on your days off, can you get friends/family into the park for free or at a discount? Thanks!

Not trying to tell you what to do, but I'd keep your Pass in your name. You get lots of good discounts & food deals along with free parking, hotel deals, challenge park discounts/deals, ride nights, and early show seating. I have worked as a Ride Host the last 2 years, and had a Platinum Pass both seasons. I applied for Season 3, and renewed my Pass in October. After working for a month, you get 4 courtesy tickets. Give them to family/friends; (if you want). But, they must be used BEFORE Labor Day, they can't be used at BOTH Cedar Point & Soak City. However, you may use them at Soak City; )if you want to). If you have any questions, please e-mail me at: jpadden@zanestate.edu, and I'll be happy to answer them. I'm going to try to work Gemini, so if you get hired for Area 3 as a Ride Host, ask Steve for Gemini.

When are you available to work? Let's suppose it's from May 20th to August 25th. That means you can use your pass before you start working at the park or afterwards...

09 - Breakers Boutique
10 - Emporium
11 - Costume Character for the Peanuts Gang
12 - Day off relief for the town / trail
13 - Not going to put that on the internet, but not merch....

I guess I didn't think of that... I could go on the weekends when they open in may. I put my availability starting June 3rd until August 25th, give or take a couple of days on the ending date, I don't remember exactly. Has anyone seen if their application has been viewed yet? Whenever I log into my application it just says its been submitted and stays active for the 2013 season

The way the managers see it, at least in park operations, if you can be there for the the weekends to play in the park, before or after your availability, you should be able to work them. Just something to think about.

2010: Corkscrew/Super Himalaya, Shoot the Rapids
2011: Shoot the Rapids, Sweeps, Mantis
2012: TL Area 3 Sweeps
2013: TL Snake River Falls
2014: Ride Supervisor Sky Ride
2015: Ride Supervisor Sky Ride

That's exactly how they think too! I would just do a ticket or wait until you're hired so you can go in the park on your off days with your friends since you're given 4 free tickets to give to family and friends.

My application says the same thing buddy. Supervisors will be hired first, then Leadership; (Blue Tags), then Returning Red Tags, then first years. So, it will be soon buddy, don't worry. My first year, they didn't hire me til the first week of April.

Another thing, you can get overtime. as the season goes on they'll be looking for people to do extra hours. Cleaning up the park after it closes and what not. But you have to talk to your area manager or someone like that to get extra hours. So typically after you clock out from your assigned job you can go do your extra hours if you were given them.

Use the term "overtime" lightly. You will not get paid any extra for it, you will still get paid your contracted wage.

I know that. When I said overtime I was only referring to "extra hours" not a raise in pay. Usually when people think of overtime they're just thinking of getting more hours. Atleast I do.

In the 'real world' overtime = time and a half pay.
