Employment Experience

Hey Folks!

I'll be apply to Cedar Point in the summer of 2004 and I have a question. I'm 17 now and have never had the need for a job. Chances are, I won't need a job NEXT summer either, but even if I do (chances are remote) it'll prolly just be fast food or Wal-Mart. :) Is this going to effect whether or not I get a job at the Point? Ride Op will be my first choice, like so many others, and I was just curious if my chances would be slim if I had not prior work experience. THanks for the info!

Hey there Jay -

Not having prior work experience should not impede you from getting hired at all. I got hired when I was eighteen and had not worked anywhere else before that. I think Cedar Point is the first job for a lot of people - there are plenty of people 16 and under who work there too. I don't think experience is as important as a willingness to work hard! :)

I applied 01/80 and called 2 weeks later to bug them about my app. I called every 3 or 4 days to get the ball rolling. I had "experience" with "food"(hot dogs and pizza) so Ken Reztleff (nice man) got ahold of me and hired me. If you want to get hired just bug the crap out of someone till they hire you! Brute force and ignorance will rule the day almost always!
Oh yes please pretend that you are sincere and tell them that "I really want the job". I have used that technique to get hired and it is a winner. Now I sell investments and the same stuff is true! You must be able to pretend that you are sincere or truly be!
Just for the info., to be a ride op you must be 18 years old..

Work experience is not essential. I worked with people on MF this summer that have never had a job before. Just tell them when they call you that your a big people person! And if they dont call you. Call them, they might have just overlooked your application.

I would suggest not having CP as you first job only because of the fact that going from never working, to working 80 hours a week, would be way way too hard. It was bad enough making the switch from part time with school to the schedules CP gave me.

Shawn

70 hours a week would be good for the kid.
I've known of a few people who never had a job before they worked at CP. I think that doesn't really bother the folks who do the hiring, because then they can train the newbies to work for them, their way. Cedar Point was my first job, I interviewed when I was 17, asking to work in Ride Op, and I started work the following June after I turned 18. It's a good first job to have if you're not a kid. The long hours make every other job I've had seem easy. It aslo proves that you have a monster work ethic, as long as you finish the your contract. And, there's always the fun stuff that you get to do that you probably couldn't do in high school. It's definetley a job experience you can't get at Wal-Mart! :)

Yeah, it is pretty cool to get to see stuff that some guests would kill to see, under rides, electrical rooms and stuff! :)

Shawn, you are right, going from never having worked to working 80 hours a week IS quite a shocking experience. I think that is what scares away a lot of the new people - heck, that is what caused me to leave my first year!

Even though I knew ahead of time that the hours would be plentiful, I don't think anything can really prepare you for the experience...but once you've worked at CP, most other jobs will look easy in comparison...(wow, only 8 hours a day - that's like a half-day!) Working at CP is kind of like just diving right in instead of testing the water first, but I think it's an awesome experience for kids to have, as long as they are able to stick with it.

My problem with CP having been my first job is now I cannot possibly imagine working anywhere else. Ah, the life of a CP dork...:-)

I only wish I would have gone back for a second season and said "screw you" to my girl freind at the time who happened to be a cheating slug.

If only' dont make that mistake. Enjoy the experiecnce while you are young and can do it. Go back, have fun, drugs, sex and rock and roll are a fun way to live when young. I still do it to an extent decades later. Have fun while you can. You will have 50 damn years to work at a reality job and let me tell you it is not as fun!
