The simple fact is, Jeff has real insider information. If he says it won't be 500... darnit, it won't be 500!

I wouldn't say that "most" aren't red ad white. I know many on the "tower field" in Fort Wayne are red and white.

I'm from Fort Wayne (when I'm not at school) and I never noticed the red and white. At least when I drive by they all seem to be grey. Perhaps I never paid enough attention, haha. Anyway, my point still stands, as long as it has blinking lights, the color doesn't matter!

Oh, yeah? Then explain why 47 CFR 17.21 says that antenna structures taller than 200' must be painted and lighted, and 47 CFR 17.53 gives the specifications for the particular shades of white and orange, also the particular lamp wattages...

Why not?

Because it won't be.

I have heard the "no taller than 500 feet" things on several sites. I am wondering how is this possible? Is this going to be a law from Congress? That part Ii don't understand.

As for actual height...how many times are we going to have to go over this?! Go back and read the previous threads. It seems to me, that most of the hints are there!

On the topic of the color of the track, my point is that at the lower levels -- which is where the red and white track is now -- the color scheme is purely CP's choice, not an FAA rule. If ALL track over 200' had to be red and white MF would look somewhat different, right? And, once again, I would think that if the FAA were governing the color of anything, I would think that it would be the huge tower that appears to be quite yellow.
Yeah, it really stands out

Yes, 47 CFR 17.21 does say that, but it also says "The Commission may modify the above requirement for painting
and/or lighting of antenna structures, when it is shown by the applicant
that the absence of such marking would not impair the safety of air
navigation, or that a lesser marking requirement would insure the safety
thereof.
"

According to the website for the beacon listed above, if you have a number of lights on the antenna structure (and not just one at the top) then the painting isn't needed. Having multiple lights typically meets the visibility requirements.

Besides, those rules apply to radio towers, not roller coasters :)

as far as i knew... the lights were the only requirements at CP... i heard somewhere that the area is a "No Fly Zone"
Right; the reference to the CFR was specifically for the questions about broadcast towers that came up earlier in this thread. The paint color on antennas IS regulated. Other obstructions are handled a bit differently. I think this may go back to the case where a New York City radio station got into a huge argument with the FCC about not painting their antenna supporting structure with alternating orange and white stripes because, quite frankly, the owner of the Empire State Building refused to allow his building to be painted in that way..... :)

I would think that anyone who is a pilot that flies around the Cedar Point area would KNOW that there are large roller coasters around, and would make it a point to NOT buzz around that area at 200 or 300 feet....which I would think might get the pilot in some trouble if they DID do that.

It's not like Cedar Point is a huge secret...any pilot with common sense would know to stay clear of the area.

I just checked the webcam view from WANE. You're right. Sorry, I apoligize :) I'm gonna blame the fact that I'm always driving and don't ever look up at them (the bases are gray I think). I know I've seen all gray towers before though. Somewhere. I know they exist :)

Anyway, now that I've made myself look like a fool, back to coasters. I was just trying to say, origianlly, before we got off topic, that coaster colors aren't regulated. Again, sorry for the misinformation.

Just so everybody knows, aircraft can't fly lower than 500ft above the highest object in the area, and 1,000ft above the highest object in congested (city) areas. So, you don't have to worry about MF or #16 getting buzzed.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up Jeff. ;-)
