East of Chicago Pizza

Isn't/Wasn't the pizza joint at the Huron River public docks a Cameo? If so, I have fond memories of that place (and their Ms. Pac-Man machine) when my dad had a boat down there.

That's Dockside Pizza. Great place to hang out after the football game. Cameo opened their first Huron place just a couple of years ago.

Dockside... that was great stuff. Only a short walk from the marina our boat was in (last sailboat-friendly before the bridge).

Chet & Matt's pizza is an extremely poor imitation of the famous Cameo Pizza. They (Chet & Matt) were once associated with the Loeser family at the Cameo, but there was a falling out, and they went out on their own. They use a similar recipe, and cut the pizza like the Cameo, but it is definitely not the same. C & M is basically production-line glop for the after-the-high-school-football-game crowd.

You want good pizza, go to the original Cameo. Their two big secrets are in the dough, and the combination of cheeses that they use. A very good friend of mine tossed pizza for them for many years. (He is now the Food & Beverage Manager at Lyman Harbor)

Also, give Pizza Brothers a try. Their stuff is pretty good. Pizza House on either end of Sandusky still slings a decent pie. Dockside Pizza down in Huron was very good. But, there was a place back by Nickel Plate Park in Huron, back in the late 1970's, early 1980's that made the killer pizza. The escapes me just now, lost in the mists of time and alcohol.

You're probably thinking of the Sandbar, Tank. That was a long time ago, but good pizza.

I'll vouch for Pizza Bros. ... good stuff. We actually order from them more than any other place.

I have yet to try Chet and Matt's. Does it compare to any other pizza chain? I usually don't go for chain pizza, I like Amie's and Gino's here in T-Town! :)

I live in Monroe, is it worth the drive?

That's it! Duke's Sandbar! I take it they're out of business now? I'm thinking it must have been about 1984 when I was in there last. I was working Front Desk/Night Audit at Sawmill Creek at the time. Greg Majoy was a part owner of the place by then. I think he may still be a Huron police officer? Of course, the Majoy family is pretty thick on the ground in Huron. I used to date one of the girls; Hook's daughter, Susan.

I'll vouch for Pizza Bros. ... good stuff.

A bit of Pizza Bros. trivia - the name was picked by a 3rd grade class as part of a corporate contest. They also have a store in Bucyrus.

East of Chicago has had a place in Delaware, Ohio for a couple of years now. If you make it as far west as Castalia, try the Village Pizza House, on Bogart Rd., just outside of town. Killer 'za, and their BLT sub is absolutely to die for.

I don't know if it's still around or not. I haven't been down that way in a long time.

Gino's is definatly worth the drive. Make sure that you go to the one by Toledo Hospital though!

Amie's is good, but it's on West Central, probably FARTHER from you. Gino's is better. Amie is Gino's ex wife and tried to copy his recipie!

Let's go straight to the Merry-Go-Round!

"Farter" from you is a good or bad thing? :)

LOL! I guess I should type a little slower!

And to answer your question, it depends on who you are! ;)

I've only gone there once, it it was the worst service I've ever recived. The waitress actually asked us to give her her tip before the pizza even came out because she wanted to go home. Pizza was good though.

hey thanks i'll think about trying maybe one day

There are quite a few EoC around my house. 4 of my friends work at different ones. They have pretty good pizza, the best being the BBQ chicken and the Mexican pizza. Their cheese pizza is bad, IMO.

BTW, I had the best pizza ever a few weekends ago. At Ashland University, students can order a large pizza for $3 that is delivered to their dorm!!! Of course, I thought it would be awful pizza for only $3, but surprisingly it was probably the best cheese pizza I have ever had.
