Downtown Sandusky

Just so anyone new coming to Cedar Point this summer. Sandusky is a dead town. There's nothing to do there. Going to the bars is about the only good thing about it. I encourage any of you on your day off to walk around the city and see for yourself. It's actually rather amusing being it's near Cedar Point.

Actually, there is a lot to do AROUND the city. Kelley's Island and Put-In-Bay are great attractions (well, at least if you like to drink, especially PIB) and Cleveland is only about an hour east of Sandusky. Cleveland has just about any kind of entertainment you can imagine, and it's an easy day trip.
Even the name "SANDUSKY" sounds like a wild west ghost town.

Those who think that bars are the only good thing about Sandusky would probably rather spend their time at a bar anyway.

I'd encourage anyone to visit http://www.buckeyenorth.com and order a free visitor's guide. Then you'll see exactly how much there is to do.

Is the Blue Hole still open? :)

Seriously, you're an hour away from downtown Cleveland, probaby a little less. The city's comeback has a lot to do with tourism. There's the rock hall, the science museum, tower city, the flats... it's a very cool place to be in the evening.

Funny you should ask, Jeff.

I found this article a few months ago. It's no longer on the Fox 8 web site, so I'm reproducing it here. Hopefully I'm not violating any copyrights by doing so!

The Return of the Mysterious Blue Hole
Neil Zurcher, WJW Fox 8 News

Remember "The Blue Hole" at Castalia, Ohio? It was supposed to be bottomless. The water contained no oxygen and had to be aerated before fish could live in it. Thousands flocked to the spring each year to stare into its blue waters. But changing laws and increased operating costs finally prompted the closing of the old tourist attration. Many thought it was gone forever, annexed by a private club, but last year the state of Ohio bought an abandoned fish hatchery that adjoined the "Blue Hole" and guess what they found: a new Blue Hole, less than a hundred feet from the old one. How deep is the new one? Deep enough that while doing some work, a pickup truck accidentally drove into the hole; it finally stopped on a ledge, 70 feet down! Like the original the water is devoid of oxygen and must be aerated before fish will live in it. The state plans to use the land to raise fish to stock Ohio lakes and streams, but will let visitors see the new "Blue Hole." Perhaps someday it will become a park. Open Monday through Friday when the hatchery is open. Admission is free.

I would like to mention a few other attractions in the area. The Sandusky Mall offers numerous places to shop and dine. Sports City has an arcade, miniature golf, and batting cages. There are several golf courses in the area. For you historical people Thomas Edison's birthplace is in Milan, about 20 minutes from Sandusky. And of course, ther are the islands. There are things to do and sites to see, you just have to look for them.
Does anyone know what the word "Sandusky" means and how it came about? Well, thanks to my wonderfull history teacher, I DO!

When the explorers were mapping the "Ohio Valley" and the Great Lakes, they came to a penninsula with a small indian village at the base. Although the indians in the Ohio Country were mostly peacefull, the explorers decided to stay clear of the indian village. They went around the village by going onto the penninsula just a little bit. On the penninsula, they found a single indian resting up against a tree. The felt that, since it was only one indian, they would wake him up to ask him what the place was called, so they could put it on the map. They did so and the indian replied "Sandusky". Hence the name.

Now, you say, why is that so interesting? Well, further research indicated that Sandusky was not one word, but three: "San Dus Kee". Those words roughly translate into "I don't know". 8-)

That's all for today class! ****By the way, this was brought up when Chitown mentioned the name....*****

Veterans House, Malls, Bowling Alies, Animal Saffaries, and of course Cedar Point.
My 5 summers there, i was never dissapointed. You can always find something to do. Toledo is to the west, Cleveland to the east. If someone gets board this summer, that is there own fault!!
