Do you wish the Jumbo Jet was still around?

Jumbo was my first coaster on my first visit to CP in '76. The height requirement was 48" as my cousin could ride. He had to put heel supports in his shoes to make height for the rides.

I rode the Jumbo Jet back in 1974 on a school trip. It was the ride that got me hooked on CP. I wish that I could ride it again... It may be a bit of a boring ride compared to the coasters of today, but back then it was the best.

Kindest Regards,

Where was that located in the park when it was operating?

Where Disaster Transport is I believe.

It was actually in the parking lot, ahead of the Space Spiral. It sat on wooden blocks, and the action of the ride caused it to "walk" towards the east. This necessestated it being winched back into position occassionaly.

Yes, it looked directly at the Space Spiral. Back then there was a line up on the beach that started with Wildcat, Oceana aquarium, a gift shop, the Upsidedown Funhouse, the beach bathhouse, a food stand (where i worked 2nd year) the Matterhorn and the Super Himalaja. The Jumbo Jet was in that corner, too, but around the corner facing the Space Spiral.. I think Spiral Refreshments was there by then, too. After Jumbo Jet was gone the new Wildcat took it's place, the old Wildcat went to Valleyfair..

CP Mac CP emp '73-'74:

If you worked @ CP 73-74 did you ever work on the Jumbo Jet Crew?

No, thelostcoaster, I was in food service for Interstate United - at the Surrey the first year, (between Cadillacs and Cedar Downs), and the Beach Refreshments as manager the second year. I rode Jumbo Jet just about everyday, though, and knew the guys on the ride.

So rumor has the the Jumbo Jet left CP at the end of the season 1978 for Palace Playland do you know of anyone that confirm or deny this? What color was the original Jumbo Jet?

Here it is.

http://www.rcdb.com/ig355.htm?picture=1

While the colors aren't great in the photo you can see that the track was red, and the supports were kind of gun-metal gray, maybe a little lighter than that.

The pink striped "refreshments" is where I worked. The roof had huge polka dots. (I might have been standing in there when the photo was taken!) Directly across from my window, just outside the picture to the right is the Space Spiral.

RCDB lists the ride as having moved to Palace Playland with other stops along the way to it's final destination in Russia, of all places.

So there you go.

So the main part of the track was red and the other color was a blueish grey color which would make it the same color as the Jumbo Jet at Coney Island that was installed the same year... I have a smaller version of the picture and just noticed in the link another ride... is that the Matterhorn? I forgot all about the huge polka dots on the roof that you could see from the Space Spiral. I wondering if our Jumbo Jet is still standing in Russia, if that in fact is where it ended up. Hmmm to take a ride again

-remember, line jumping is NOT a sport!!-

Actually the Jumbo Jet was painted "Schwarzkopf blue"
(which is what the color of the "A" frame on the Giant
Wheel was) and bright fire engine red track. He seems to
have used that color combination on a lot of his rides,
unless the purchaser specified something different. As
I recall that was extra.

The Jumbo Jet was a great ride in its time! It was FAST and smooth. As others have stated, it was a maintenance headache. The trains ran up the spiral on electric motors off a center power rail like a subway train. That power rail was about a foot too short, so, depending on the weight distribution of the train, trains would often not roll over the top and just stop on the rollbacks. Maintenance would send a guy up and he would just give the train a push to send it on its way. I remember peak busy days during the summer when a maintenance guy would spend the entire day at the top of the ride just to push stuck trains over the hump.

One of the reasons that the ride (and all of the Schwarzkopf rides)was a pain in the but to work on is that the maintenance manuals were all in technical German. CP was among the first parks in North America to import his rides, and the only liason between the buyer and the builder was the importer Morgan "Mickey" Hughes. I remember that Harry Bray had to higher a engineering professor in Cleveland to translate the manuals, once the rides were out of warrenty. Some things, just didn't lend themselves to translation and led to some trial and error when some situations came up particular with the control systems.

Link to the one at Coney Island. Don't know if they are the same ride, but there is a video of it.
