Disaster Transport...ch ch ch changes

Wasn't there once audio on the ride, towards the end, where a dude yelled, "were losing control!," or something like that?

It was as you went through one of the mid-course brakes.

And timed with the plunge into more complete darkness. It was great.

Earlier Jeff mentioned that Kinzel called Avalanche Run a "dud". I'm only speaking from anecdote here, but when I rode it there was always a long line.

I abhor Disaster Transport with a passion. The novelty wore off the first year, even before all the theming evaporated. I agree that the area could really use the lake view, and the DT building is an eyesore. Frankly, I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has.

There are only two reasons I can think of as to why it still exists. 1) It gets enough riders to warrant its existence. 2) It adds to CP's coaster count. I think switching it back to Avalanche Run would still meet both of those requirements, and it would also be a neat change. I don't visit many other parks, but has anyone else made a change to a ride and then changed it back?

Another satisfactory solution would be to raze DT and put in another coaster, even an inexpensive kiddy coaster. Its proximity to Kiddy Kingdom would even fit the area's theme. I've also thought the location would be ideal for another down-and-back like Blue Streak, since there's room to the south along the beach. A family-oriented coaster I think would be ideal, since it would be appealing to both kids and adults.

^ - you're forgetting reason #3 as to why it is still around. Storage. There is a lot of stuff stored in there, not to mention the haunted house.

^ #4 - tearing down a buidling of that size ain't cheap. It's probably cheaper to run the ride than it is to remove it. Probably the same reason the dolphin stadium still stands long after Oceana ceased to exist.

^Is building an entirely new roller coaster in a different area of the park (probably at the expense of some existing rides) cheaper than removing a building, or even the entire ride? Cost of "destruction" is not a deterrent for Cedar Fair. They have shown that they're willing to tear down in order to build anew (WWL for Maverick), or simply tear down an entire park (GL), so why can't they do it here?

The ride is crap, the building is an eyesore, there's so much potential beauty around that area, so why not do something about it? It's the "screw it, people will come anyways" attitude that is a trademark of the Dick Kinzel regime. The nonchalant manner that dooms a park for mediocrity. Sure, people will continue to ride DT, but CP wont gain any love for it. What CF fails to realize is that it's the little things like park beauty and quality, not roller coasters in themselves, that make a guest experience more than just a good time, but a great time, and make them that much more willing to come back.

The ride is over 20 years old. Besides the rotting building it is old technology that was really short lived hype. Bobsled rides were the cats meow for about 5 years and lost their appeal. Threre is no view on the ride except the trough (even when the building wan't around it), most are lower capacity (cp's is the highest capacity model). DT is just boring with or without the roof. LaVibora at SFoT does have the advantage of still being in the open. It has the close to the floor seating like a real bobsled which allows you to really feel the bumps and turns, but it is still boring with no view of anything except the trough. DT and MS will be the next 2 on the chopping block.

Sadly, I have not been over to the park, which is pretty odd for a coaster enthusiast.
I think they should just take the whole ride out it is a waste of space.
They don't even say welcome to alaska anymore.
I was bummed when they didn't do this.

I too am for the removal of DT to take full advantage of the lake. But only if they can acheive a quality expansion of that area of the park.

On the other hand I do enjoy the bobsled ride for what it is and would be disappointed to see it go for another ride/attraction that continues to be a barrier.

Perhaps they can move it and spruce it up a bit. I have often thought that it might fit nicely behind the games row just across the way. I know there are already uses for the land behind there so I don't really know if it's a good location. It looks like there is a building back there and the ride would have to cut into the parking there; but if it could work it would be an inocuous location for a large ugly building and a way to slip a ride into an awkward space.

smoke 'em if you got 'em

The buildings back there are the security and storage units and some maintenence areas also. It would be intersting to see the ugly building torn down, but there are a lot of good and bad things that go with it:

Good- It makes the bobsled ride unique, as it is the only indoor bobsled coaster, they use it for a lot of storage, and there are some cool stories about the ride that make it what it is.

Bad- It's ugly, no average guest would ever figure out what 12E means, it blocks the view of the lake, and it is a magnet for employees and even random park guests to go back there and cause trouble............So I say lets see what Kinzel thinks about it in the near future, as it will not be there forever. :)

What does 12E mean? lol. I haved asked here before, and the answer I got was, "Some people believe that that is Dick Kinzel's shoe size." lol.

^Wow, that is quite silly. If he wanted his stamp on the ride did he really have to do it in huge bold letters on the side of the already hideous building? At least the mystery is finally solved. I guess Dick Kinzel's shoe size wasn't really revealed after all. ;) lol.

"You wanna, you gotta, you hafta hold on, Cedar Point...HOLD ON!"

This is very common among Disney Imagineers. In addition to the "Hidden Mickeys" that are common internet lore, the imagineers often put personal references into attractions, movies, etc that don't make any sense to anyone other than them. No harm really.

If they were to replace DT perhaps they could put a spinning wild mouse ride in that building, much like the one at Kennywood.

Take a look at the paintings on the Wave Swinger at Knott's... You will see paintings of both Mr. and Mrs. Kinzel... And the area that houses Flight of Fear at Kings Island is now known as Fort Kinzel...

There are little things if you look for them.

Ripcord Crew 2002 / MF Crew 2004

The ride is only part of the problem Dan. The building has to go. That shoreline is one of the prettiest places on Lake Erie and it is completely obscured by the hideous "warehouse".

Forget putting a spinning mouse in the building. Tear down the entire structure and put the spinning mouse right there on the beach. Take advantage of the uniqueness that is the Cedar Point peninsula. Don't ignore it all together.

There are some decent indoor roller coasters out there but Cedar Point's meat and potatoes is the interaction between ride and non-rider. You don't have to ride any of Cedar Point's coasters to appreciate them. When you put a coaster inside a building the non-riding family members are completely left out and I think that is a mistake unless the ride is truly remarkable...ala Space Mountain.

The hidden Mickeys are cool. They are discrete. Putting your huge initials on the side of a big ugly building is not. lol.

"You wanna, you gotta, you hafta hold on, Cedar Point...HOLD ON!"

Yeah, i agree the building is ugly... but on a hot, humid day it is kinda nice to just wait in line in an air-conditioned building... or if it's pouring rain. I think if they stepped up the theming, DT has a lot of potential.
