Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has survived a ride on DT with their hands up. It seems unsafe to me because of the low clearnaces and dark tunnels. Don't ever say it's not possible to hit your hands on ceilings because I cut my hands on the rocky ceilings of the Matterhorn's caves at Disneyland. :(
Too be honest, I really never ride it all that often. Personally for me, that ride is a waist of my time. I do ride other rides at Cedar Point, but I go mainly for the coasters. It's one of the reasons I joined ace. So the answer is no, I have never put my hands up on it.

Yeah I have ridden it with my hands up, never hit anything or saw much either. not to say you could not hit something.

Welcome back Millennium Force riders...We all want to know how was your RIDE!!!!!
Cool. I'll do it next time. But I'll have to go ahead and agree with Mark. It does kinda suck. The ride would be awesome if it were still Avalanche Run. That ride was sweet. I remember as a little kid, that finale (or the part that says "We're losing control") got me to let out a scream every single time. No matter how hard I tried to hold it in. CP should just leave themed rides to bad parks like SFMM with their poorly designed sations (the stupid loading station on Riddler makes it almost impossible to plan for a group to ride on the same train) and queues. Cool ride tho. :)
just a little off-topic note :
i've always been amazed at the amount of time people waste trying to get on the same train as their friends... especially on the rides that handle 4 riders across... why don't they just ride with 1 or 3 of their friends and meet the rest at the exit of the ride... they would enjoy the ride just as much without annoying the people in line around them. i always laught a little when i see a group of riders spend a bunch of time getting everything lined up to ride together... only to have somebody in front of them rearrange things and screw it all up again :)
When I saw the topic of this thread, my first reaction was, (as was probably that of Jeff and Dan and Scott and a bunch of other people) "Uh-oh, here we go again!" It's refreshing to see a DIFFERENT Disaster Transport thread for a change.
Anyway, to the matter at hand...The track on Disaster Transport is 12' in diameter (I don't remember where I read that...) and I believe all of the scenery and such is constructed outside the 12' cylindrical envelope even in areas where the track is not a full tube. The seat is near the bottom of the car, and is probably less than 24" away from the floor of the track. This implies a total clearance of nine or ten feet from the seat to the top of the tube. How long are your arms?

Thats to far away to touch with my arm, But I better watch my ......oh never mind.

Actually, I have had a lot of luck over the years when I have gone with family. We always manage to end up on the same coaster train if we're all riding together

Ya, that ride with be so much better with some more lights.
I'm not sure about that. I don't think many people remember riding Avalance Run I sure don't but I did however get the chance to ride the Alpine Bobsleds at The Great Escape in Lake George New York (http://www.sixflags.com/greatescape/index.cfm) This ride has a similar layout to DT and it is outside it was more of a big kiddie ride. I do think that DT has a chance to be a good ride. When I was younger I remember being amazed by that ride. If they cleaned up the line, made a new pre-show video, make the ride section more "dark rideish" and it should have some cool black light effects. Finally, an onboard audio system ala Rock'n Rollercoaster could complete a revamp of the ride. I know that much of this will not happen but we can always hope.
I did survive, no cut finger!
Ohhhhhh Toofast, do tell, you never finished your statement!!

The more you ride it, the more you want it!

Your right Dave, when I saw the thread at first I thought I had to get ready to type another of my World Famous Pro Disaster Transport threads :)

I for one always enjoy reading your pro Disaster Transport threads. It is nice to know that there are other people out there that don't think it should be torn apart, thrown in a dumpster, and forgotten about.
Now on the hands up subject, I for one have never thought about riding it with my hands up. I'm not sure what the point would be, but what the heck, maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Since my name was mentioned by Dave, I feel obliged to respond. Regarding DT threads, I tend skip right over them (Please don't point out the irony of this post. I'm well aware of it :) ). Regarding the ride itself, I try to ride it at least once a visit. Personally, I would prefer Avalanche Run over the DT themeing, but we've heard that one before. There's not much else to say about it.

Jumping way back up to the post about people wanting to ride together. I know my friends and I like to ride on the same train because there's nothing like the feeling of you all getting off the most thrilling ride of your life at the same time. The feeling you get when you get off and see the look on everyone's face at the same time is indescribeable(sp). When you break up the group, half the group has lost all their adreneline(sp) when the others return and you no longer feel like you've shared an awesome experience. That's why. (Man, I should be a poet or something :))
Something I ran into the other day while trying to track something else down in one of my files of useless information...
I bumped into a depriciation schedule for Cedar Point that I copied out of one of their Annual Reports. Their depreciation schedule is 17 years for rides. That suggests that...
o Avalanche Run, which was constructed in 1985, will be fully depriciated in 2002.
o Disaster Transport, which opened in 1990, assuming they restarted the depreciation clock for that one, will be fully depriciated in 2007.
Furthermore, this suggests that Disaster Transport has a good financial reason for remaining in the park through at least 2002, and possibly through 2007.
Just thought I would point that out...

Have I ever mentioned that Cedar Point decisions often come down to dollars? :)

Okay, then Gemini, Blue Streak, the CCMR and Corkscrew have bottomed as well. =)
I think that they should tear it down not because it is a bad ride but because they are negelecting it. If they are just going to sit there and let it rot, than might as well tear it down, a themed ride needs constant attention, especially in hte details, it is not like any other coaster where the only maintenance is mechanical.
