2001: Sweep Zone 5
2002: Sweep Zone ?
2002..2 coasters..one park..
just a dumb rumor..
Mainstream media outlets like the Register had an OBLIGATION AND A DUTY to report that story. The late Eric Sevaried put it, news is "new, unusual, and out of the ordinary". That would describe this unfortunate incident now, wouldn't it?
It would be a DERELICTION OF DUTY for journalists to ignore this story. I don't know what cockamanie crap idea you have, but true journalists do NOt play "bleeding hearts". They must not ignore a story out of fear of upsetting relatives of the deceased or that it might scare potential CP guests away. This sad incident is something that should appear on TV, radio and print news in Cleveland, Toledo, and perhaps statewide.
I'm sorry to see some here have a twisted idea what journalism is. Mainstream media reporters can not and must not play sympathetic at the expense of the public they serve. I'm already upset at corporate-owned networks and media outlets picking and choosing what stories to report; I would be downright ANGRY if a small-town daily like the Register chose to ignore this story out of fear of upsetting some folks.
I'm sorry that I must say this, but we do have some pretty ignorant people around. Go ask a reporter or journalism teacher if you don't believe me. This is a very sad incident, obviously, but mainstream media outlets are OBLIGATED to report this, in a fair, accurate manner.
You are wrong, Tim......this IS news!!!!!!!!!! Got that?
The problem is that her death is NO MORE sad and tragic than any of the OTHER DEATHS that occured in the Sandusky area that day. Every family who loses a loved one feels the same pain that this woman's family feels.
So, the question is: does the fact that this happened in line for a ride at CP make it newsworthy?
I'd argue that it doesn't - no more than, say, a grocery store. I can't recall the last time the Register posted a story about someone having a heart attack at their local Blockbuster Video store. With the numerous stories/editorials/investigations/etc about roller coaster and carnival ride safety, and with the debate over federal regulation in the public's mind, the Register figured it had a real attention-getting story on their hands here. It had less to do with the tragic death of the woman than it did with the location in which it occured.
THAT's the problem here.
My $0.02.

P.S. The Register is not alone, both in the catergory of sensationalistic journalism and in honest, fair reporting. There are journalists all over the world who are better on both sides of the coin.
sick and twisted view we have? C'mon use the common sense God gave ya. Our views of the press is no more twisted than your own..Jeff if anything works very close with the media and his point was very objective if anything..not one sided. The register ran this story because it had CP written on it and a death..plain and simple..It was out of no obligation to the public or their standards of reporting news. They saw that a major theme park had a death that day and regardless of the impact or circumstances pounced on it.
You talk of ignornant people around well its time to take a hard look in the mirror on what you said above. You contridicted yourself many times. The media is glorifying all deaths and injuries this year related to theme and amusements parks and the truth of the matter is that the numbers this year 2001 of deaths and injuries are lower than ever...98 and 99 had twice as many but you heard nothing...

my question is "do you get it?" appears not

This story is a typical example of "if it bleeds it leads." That's it, nothing more. It is very sad when someone dies, but is it any different than someone dying at the grocery store? A gas station? A McDonald's? No, it's not a bit different. Would they run the story if it happened at any of those places? No, because "heart attack" and "McDonald's" in the same headline would hardly grab your attention.
As a news director or editor, I would not have run the story. As far as I know, none of the Toledo or Cleveland TV stations picked it up. They obviously had better judgement.
This story is sensationalist crap at its best. Next time you're going to start lecturing people, know who your audience is, because frankly, I'm insulted and a little pissed off.

As long as all of you here proclaim yourselves to be so smart, DEFINE what is "sensationalism"! If this is sensationalistic, what describes the stories about Chandra Levy, O.J., and all the Kennedys?
Jeff, it's clear that you are NOT a media professional......unless you worked in media relations, which is NOT journalism but spin-control. You are too brainless to realize that the "if it bleeds it leads" cliche refers to violent crime, NOT deaths by natural causes. Figure it out!
While this story is certainly not front-page material, this incident happened at a high-profile place. Combine that with the fact the victim was 28 years old, this is definitely NEWS. It wouldn't be news if it happened anyplace else (McDonald's or whatever) because there is only one CP, a place that attracts thousands of visitors each day. It's clear that none of you here ever took a class in journalism. Public Relations is NOT journalism.....it is PROPAGANDA.
If it didn't make the Toledo or other outstate papers, it either was a) the reporters at the papers did not hear about it, ot b) they had enough stories to fill their newsholes. Again, this is not really front-page news, but Sandusky is NOT Chicago, Detroit or Cleveland; Sandusky is a SMALL TOWN of 35,000 people. You damn right a small town paper has a duty and an obligation to report this! Remember, twentysomething people don't usually die of natural causes. If this would've been an elderly person, it's news content would've been questionable. If a newspaper in a town of only 35,000 cannot report this, what the hell can they report? Certainly not local politics, because it's clear young people are never interested in that stuff. Maybe I am right; today's young people are too disinterested to read the news. What an ignorant generation of Americans we are raising. We'd rather just spend our whole lives partying, going to amusement parks and talk about our social lives rather than showing concern for our country and our communities.
You should offer apologies to all those who have worked hard to report the news, some of whom even DIED while reporting. Your attitudes display a callous, despicable nature towards all those who do care. Shameful!
I've worked in every form of media from print to television, and I shouldn't have to recite my "brainless" resume to prove my point. I've worked in more newsrooms than you have, and I know what journalism is not because of a piece of paper in a purple and gold folder, but because I've been out there.
Maybe I am right; today's young people are too disinterested to read the news. What an ignorant generation of Americans we are raising. We'd rather just spend our whole lives partying, going to amusement parks and talk about our social lives rather than showing concern for our country and our communities.
What dismal and sad view of the world you have. I know that the kids that I coach are wonderful, caring and intelligent young people. I don't know what kids you're raising, but I'd rather you didn't lump them in with the rest of them.
Please excuse me now while my disinterested self goes to an amusement park now to party at the expense of world peace.
