There's frozen custard, and while not totally authentic (comes out of a soft serve machine) its actually pretty tasty and comes close. Real frozen custard is totally a northern Ohio thing, so that may be the closest to a signature or local-ish dessert at Cedar Point. I always get a dish, I think it's better than Toft's.Totally a northern Ohio thing? Have you ever been out of northern Ohio?
What's that supposed to mean? I don't live in northern Ohio, so yes I have. If you're questioning my point, I have been to northern Ohio and lived in the Cleveland area when I was a kid and frozen custard stands, using the authentic recipe with product from an actual frozen custard machine, were everywhere.
I've also been to St. Louis, which is a big frozen custard town with Ted Drewes and Joeys leading the pack I suppose. I've also been through Indiana where Culvers also serves up delicious custard at many, many locations. But that doesn't keep the folks of northern Ohio from knowing and appreciating the real thing. They know, as I do, their custard.
Euclid Beach was known for frozen custard and people like me who remember still miss it. East Coast Original in Cleveland makes reference to that dish. I think Cedar Point was trying to capture that nostalgia in naming their soft serve Frozen Custard, and it is good, creamy and slightly eggy, but ultimately falls short as it comes out of a soft serve machine directly onto the cone.
I've also tried many products that claim to be frozen custard, Rita's and Kohr's come to mind as products who miss the mark, terribly I should add, in authenticity.
So in kindly responding to a rather silly off season question, I wasn't trying to say that frozen custard is strictly an Ohio thing, but is totally, dude, an Ohio thing.
I'd like to see the french waffles make a return.
Yes, I loved the French waffels and would like to see them return. I always considered them a signature item.
CP has two kinds of soft serve frozen products, the custard is not renamed soft serve ice cream, it is actually a soft serve custard product. They sell the soft serve ice cream by the main gate (formerly next to Cedar Downs), on the Frontier Trail ( Toot Sweats I think) and the ice cream parlor in Frontier Town. The custard is sold on the main midway under the Sky Ride and in Frontier Town at Engine House Custard. These are two different products and are not interchangeable, that is why the prices are different.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
Yes, sorry, let's not confuse custard with soft serve, which can be an ice milk product. The custard at CP is much better.
They used to have sundaes at CP's custard stands, but last season I stopped and they just had cups and cones. With sprinkles too, I think.
The frozen custard is what I had last year- it was delicious, but my husband grew up in Altoona, PA and we always stop at the Meadows for frozen custard.
We rarely go up to the front of the park since we stay at the Breakers so I was wondering if we were missing something.
We do enjoy an elephant ear from the stand just across the train crossing past Gemini-- I don't recall the name at the moment- but there are a bunch of food stands in a row. There is always a long line and takes awhile.
When talking with someone going to a park where we know there is a unique or specially names item we'll mention it so they can try it out. Thanks for sharing all the ideas for what else we need to try on our next visit!
