Consrtuction coming from Detroit?

This is the first year in four that I have been able to commute to school without running into road construction. I live about 15 minutes away from my school - Detroit Catholic Central for those who know the area.

From I-75 south, I'd take I-280 all the way passed the turnpike where it turns into SR420, which dead ends into US20. Take US20 west to Fremont. Exit off of US20 at the US6 east (Sandusky, and, I believe it says Cedar Point) interchange. Follow the signs to Cedar Point. Not a bad ride. Scenic, and fairly comparable to the turnpike. A few lights on US20, more on US6 in Sandusky. The advantage to this route is that not much Cedar Point traffic uses it. Mostly the normal town traffic, which isn't bad in Sandusky, until it dumps you onto the Causway. Maybe, it's not any quicker, but it keeps you pre-occupied with the "scenery". Next thing you know, you're there!

Dougster, it's shorter to get off at the Oregon (Route 2) exit off I-280 than to head down past the turnpike. You can exit to US6 from Route 2 and still come in the "back way".

From Pontiac, I take

Telegraph South (M24) to

696 West to

275 South to

75 South to

280 North to

80/90 Ohio Turnpike East to

HW-4 North

I have tried many different routes, and this has been the most efficient. Mainly from Michigan, I try to avoid 75, because it heads East to Detroit and then SouthWest to Toledo, and has been under construction. 275-no construction, and you have to do 85 just to keep up with traffic....

I agree with Jmen's directions.... but I still exit at 118 (US-250). I just didn't like Ohio Route 4... but that's just me.

And yes, from the Pontiac/Auburn Hills area, Telegraph is the way to go at this point due to the construction on I-75. If traffic's clear, I think I-75 is still faster, but I can't figure out why that'd be. Logically it doesn't make sense, but I think I-75 is faster. I wonder what the mileage is between the two ways... I'll have to research this at some point.

I agree. I don't argue that at all. Route 2 just seems so monotonous to me, though. I live in Port Clinton, so it doesn't matter to me. Maybe, all the trips to Toledo have burnt me out on Route 2. There are several ways to get there with only minimal mileage difference. Route 2, through Oregon can get pretty congested in the mornings. This is why I suggested US20. Very few lights, virtually none, until you get to Sandusky. I think the lack of stop-&-go makes up for the five or ten extra miles. It's just easier on your car. But, then again, we're talking about coming in from MI, aren't we. ;-)

Thank goodness, I only live across the bay!

We have taken Telegraph (M-24) to the Lodge (M-10) to Southfield Freeway (M-39) to (I-75) from Pontiac many a times. We did the Telegraph to I-696 to I-275 route before, but always made a little better time the other route. Especially at 6am in the morning!
I go the same route as you TekGuy. I certainly don't mind the drive and it's what I'm used to. I actually like the drive through Sandusky. I don't get to see it much, so when I do go to CP, it's nice. I don't think I would take route 2 because I would not know where I'm going. I trust my route and it's not bad. Yes, the turnpike drive gets a little boring at times cutting through the farm areas, but it's still an easy drive. Been driving it now for 3 years and have no complaints yet.

I'm a firm believer that the Interstates are the safer option. Hence, I stick to them as much as possible, but I will reroute around construction.

I'm glad US 250's 5 lanes now all the way through... that'll aid that section a lot in terms of traffic flow (crossing fingers).

I'm not necessarially looking for the fastest way (although I have done 80 ~ 85 at times... depending on the 85th percentile of traffic speeds)... I just want a safe trip, even if it adds 30 minutes or an hour.

And yet another link. This one has listings for current construction information.

http://www.mdot.state.mi.us/laneclosure/

From there you can view upcoming construction, too! It doesn't list one I know of though, which is the closures of the I-75 SB ramp to M-24 and the M-24 to I-75 SB ramp.

You know there's nothing good on TV when you're desperate enough to specifically look for infomercials.

Travel tip: For all of you that are going to drive on I-280 south towards the turnpike stay away from the McDonalds near the turnpike. You will lose about half an hour just waiting for your food.

Ride Operations here I come.

I live in Canton, MI and i have always taken route 2. It only takes me 2 hours to get to the point this way. Yes route 2 is very boring, but since there are so few landmarks you learn how far you are from the point from these land makrs really quick. for example its only 30 mins to CP once you pass the nuclear plant. And plus what trip to CP would be complete with out seeing the famous "Boat on a Pole"!?

But I will take the turnpike home if i know it will be dark byt the time I reach route 2, I just fee safer on a road with lights on it than one with out.
