computers

dont want to sound slightly nerdish but do people bring computers?

dont do what makes you money, do what makes you happy!

Yeah tons of people bring computers, last season i brought my laptop and my desktop, so have fun, just remember the only thing that youcan get it dial up, and it kinda sucks cause at night, everyone is trying to get online, and that just ties up the phone lines. have fun

At largest, bring a laptop. The phone lines at CP suck and you can almost never even hit a 40 connection. Also, if you don't know your roommates, I'd be incredibly weary of not having a way to lock up your computer and keeping it out of sight. This honestly is very important.

Your right, i guess i really did not think about that, the last season, i just knew who my room mates are, I guess the first season i did not know who they were therefor i did not bring a computer, well at first once i saw who they were i did, but not the first day. Well good luck, and have fun, just make sure that you and your room mates keep the door locked, cause there are a lot of people at cedar point. and who knows what all they want.

hehe

hey dont be scared, just play it out, dont take it right away and then like have your parents ship it out like after the first month, but let me tell you something, You are going to be so busy with cedar point, that you will hardly have time to be on the internet. Like there is just so much fun stuff out threr to do, bars, or even point.

have fun

I brought my desktop last year and it worked out just fine. Of course, having an LCD cut down on how much space it take up. I know that it can be hell to try to get a line out at night, but it's nice to be able to check your email without paying the outrageous price for the rent-a-mail ones.

I brought a laptop last year, and made sure to keep it as secure as possible. Although I used it less than an hour per week, it was nice to be able to pay credit card bills, read e-mail, and other things rather conviniently.

I brought my laptop last year. . .I stayed in Commons dorms. . .so I just locked it up in my locker when it wasn't in use!

It worked out very well. . .I was able to stay in contact with a lot of people, look for things to do in other cities, search for information about places to go. . .stuff like that.

Only once did I have to wait for a line for Internet. . .but with the wonderous automatic redial modem, it's not that hard. . .it just keeps trying till it works!!

for all the time you're gonna wait to get on then do whatever you're doing, you could just goto the library and use theirs... dsl and all.

Cedar Point also has a computer lab. They're going to try to set up more of an "Internet café" atmosphere in the Rec Center this year, and Human Resources will have a person supervising the computer area at all times so that people don't exploit the allowed time, as sometimes ocurred last season.

Eh it depends. There's no way I'd take my 17" powerbook up there.
You're fine as long as you realize what you're potentially getting into. I'm very, very used to having broadband. I've got wireless G in my house, the University at Buffalo has wireless all across its campus, have 3 laptops, am a CS major... I'm quite used to having access.
But when I was up at CP, I honestly didn't really have that much time to mess around online (save the occasional email). You won't miss it, so I mean if you have real concerns or you've got nice hardware or it'll just be a pain in the ass to get your desktop/monitor up there, I definitely recommend you just leave it at home.

I know some guys who are in talks with CP to set up wireless internet in the dorms and they would try to have it payroll deducted, it'd be like $25 a month for the wireless hook-up. Hopefully if they get that up and running, it will alleviate the problems of having no lines to dial out on at night, and you won't have to wait FOREVER to look at your email and what-not. I know going from T1 to dial-up was awful!

Oooh, wireless in the dorms and apartments would be *so* worth the cost, as long as it worked decently. If the signal was good enough, one could even sit outside in the sunshine and be all warm (that sort of thing seems to work well here on my campus, depending on one's location). ^_^ I know if folks at the Point did a survey of who would be interested, they would probably get a very positive and enthusiastic response from employees.

25 a month for wireless?

Those walls are all concrete. 802.11 loses its signals pretty damn quick through concrete. They'd need a lotta access points. I can see those getting vandalized quite easily...

I have doubts.

I'm thinking of just bringing up a old P2 computer just for the internet. Maybe that will be better, plus I don't have to worry about stealing (for the most part).

If they were afraid of vandalism, they could install them above above the ceiling tiles so they are out of sight and out of mind...
I was gonna ask the guy how they were going to make the access points, or the whole network in general, today, but I forgot too! When I see him at work tomorrow, I'll ask.

Hmm, perhaps an employee LAN party with some UT2k3 (or 2k4) is in order...

-------------

I swept up trash in 03 and have no complaints about doing it again.

The guys said that the signal will not be a problem thru the concrete and they will have a lot of access points that are secure, so they won't be tampered with. They said that everything will be okay, signals will be fine, etc. :)

Oh really? That'd be pretty damn cool, then. Anyone know what CP's line is? I'm guessing a T3?
