I was talking to someone who has been assigned to Turnpike Cars, and he has no real interest in working them. He would much rather work something else, and he was curious as to what the chances were that he could persuade his manager (Debra) to change his assigned ride. Any ideas?

It really depends on a lot of things. If his contracted dates are fairly limited, so is his flexibility for different rides. Someone who's contracted through October, on the other hand, will help staffing on a greater number of rides. Usually, if you do not like your location after a week or so, supervision is more than willing to move you to a different location. I say to him give it a shot at Turnpikes, and since staffing is constantly changing throughout the season, there are always opportunities to transfer to a new location.

You know, we didn't figure that. You bring up a good point. Thanks.

You have to work on your contracted ride for 80 hours, after that you could be moved. It's totally mgmt's decision though.

You might not even work there if you get there and it has been staffed fully. When you arrive there is a possiblility that you will be asked to work at any of the ride locations. Turnpike cars isnt bad and i was the TL there 2 yrs ago and i actually enjoyed it because you were always moving around and the job made the day go by pretty quickly. Definately give it a shot and you will have a great summer.

The childrens areas aren't THAT bad. I was ATL at GCA last summer and I loved it. I like little kids so being around them all day was fine for me. It was the parents that got on my nerves. Some people just don't like the childrens areas, and if you let management know that you aren't the biggest fan of kids or working with them, they probably won't put you there.
Along these same lines, does anyone ever switch to an entirely different type of job? I mean, could you go from, say, foods to ride ops or merch? I'm just wondering because it looks like I'll be hired into foods, but I'm not really sure if I'll like that.
Are you sure this isn't the Atlantic Ocean?
GO TIGERS!
Ahh, it seems no one ever answered this question... I dont believe you can change depts. like that, and Ive never heard of it. Foods to rides? Ahh... I wouldnt count on it.

You can change departments. It's possible, I had a person working in Speed Zone last year that at one time was in ride ops

Switching to a different department is a lot harder to do than just switching positions within your own department. You need to first work a certain amount of hours in your department, and then request a transfer. Getting approved for one depends on several things:
- Being a good employee and being on good terms with your manager
- That the staffing levels in your department are adequate and they could afford to lose an employee
- You have a legitamate reason for wanting a transfer (not just, "Oh, I would rather work there.")
You never know, you could like working in Foods. If that is where you are assigned, then give it your best shot no matter what. If you end up not liking it and can't transfer, you can always apply for another position next year.
