With hindsight being 20/20 I think there are a few of us that saw the writing on the wall and knew that Geauga Lake was doomed when Six Flags tried to turn it into a large scale them park. It was never meant to be like that. Geauga Lake was always a great old time amusement park and should have stayed that way, like Kennywood. Most of us just did not want to admit that it was a bad idea because of our love of rollercoasters and the fact that all those new coasters were right in our own backyard.

I remember thinking that Cedar Fair buying the park was a bad idea at first, but something really led me to feel they could turn it around. Personally, I saw the end when Busch sold SeaWorld.

Back when Six Flags bought Geauga Lake and turned into Six Flags, I thought well this will be good for the park. It will pick up business where with all the additions they added with all the coasters they added to the park. I have to agree that Geauga Lake started to lose business with losing Sea World, but I don't think that was the big big reason. I think when they removed X-Flight it was all over for them. Everybody loved X-Flight, more than they did, Superman, Batman, and the Villian.
X-Flight was without a doubt the best ride at Geauga Lake. I can remember riding it for the first time. I waited in line for about an hour and a half. Then it started to get dark. We were seated and up the lift we went. Then it started to Lightning and Thunder and poor down rain. That had to be the best ride ever. At least they moved her to Kings Island. I get down there at least once a year so i still get to ride it. I just wish they would have left the paint and name alone. The bright green paint was cool.

In my opinion, all the rides that I rode at GL sucked, besides X-Flight, Thunderhawk, and Dominator. The log flume was a terrible log flume with no trees and a small drop (I guess I was spoiled by WWL), Villian was by far the worst coaster I have ever ridden, Double Loop was a head banger, Raging Wolf Bobs was very rough and I got stuck on it, I acutally kind of enjoyed the kiddie coaster, Head Spin was down all day and really didn't look great just from the views of it, and actually when I rode Steel Venom I enjoyed that. So there were 5 good rides at the park. I'm not a fan of spinny rides so I really didn't enjoy any rides like Texas Twister.
Anyways, about GL, it just wasn't meant to be. SF put way too many coasters in and took away the overall feel to the park. Cf did their best by cleaning up the mess, but it was too late.
No, they did not buy the place to kill it.
I never went to GL when it was Six Flags or Cedar Fair owned. I went when it was Seaworld and it was a blast. Of course I was like 3 or 4, but I remember it vividly. Great times with the family there.
Let's Get Weird.
Six Flags owned Geauga Lake long before they changed the name.

I wish there was more footage of the midways available. There is scads and scads of videos of the coasters out there, but much less "atmosphere" material to be found. Yet that's the thing I most want to see.
My author website: mgrantroberts.com.
My obsession for Cedar Point started in 2001. I talked my parents into taking us there. When my mom started to do research for our trip, she stumbled upon SFWoA's website and decided that we would go there too.
We spent our first day at Sea World and I loved every second of it. But I could not wait to get to the other side of the lake to ride the coasters. And that is what we did the second day. It was absolutely horrible. The entire atmosphere was negative. I remember asking if we could just go back to Sea World.
I wish I could have experienced Geauga Lake before the Six Flags take over. It sounds like it was a really nice place.
"You wanna, you gotta, you hafta hold on, Cedar Point...HOLD ON!"
My CP obsession started in 2001 as well when i took my first summer vacation there with the family. During the spring when my mom was looking for places to go, we originally had intended on going to Sea World. I was so excited to go and then so dissapointed when she said we would be going to some Cedar Point place i had never heard of. Needless to say, without SFWoA, i might have never gone to cedar point! oh the horror....
