Cedar Point Police?

Ok, I'm not new here but I've been reading these posts on here for a while and never signed up. My question is: What is Cedar Point Police? I hear people talking about them a lot; Is it a real police department at the point? Last summer I was kinda speeding on the causeway (along with most cars) and I came around the turn where there are some trees; There was a cop car sitting there and everyone was hitting their brakes. I thought maybe it was a Sandusky cop? But I guess it was probably CP Police? If they are a real police department; I feel safer with them there rather then a rent-a-cop security force in the post Sept 11th world! But if anybody can give me any info on them I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

The Cedar Point Police department is a bonded Police Department. In English.. they are like any other Police Department with the exception that they do have un-bonded officers (the ones that do NOT carry firearms).

Sandusky is one of the only, if not the only, cities in the counrty to have 2 complete and seperate bonded police departments.

Been that way for a long time..

A lot of Cedar Fair's security are retired cops...
They are by no means "retired". They are still active bonded officers and some of them are full timers and others work for Sandusky during the off season.

So as they may have once worked for another department at some point, they are by no means "retired".

Bob, actually Cleveland has multiple police departments. In addition to the regular force, there are the CMHA cops, the RTA Transit Police, VA Police, and in University Circle, which lies mainly in Cleveland (and a little in adjoining suberbs) has their own police force. University Circle Police work for University Circle Incorporated, which is an independant non-profit orginization.

Based on just the number of police departments that Cleveland has, and that at least one of these (University Circle) is private, I assume that there are far more than a handful of cities with more than one department.

But then again, maybe its just an Ohio thing. But I do like the idea of CP having its own police force, as they don't have to worry about much outside the park. Same thing with University Circle Police, who, since they are smaller, can offer a wider range of services than Cleveland Police (I know because they helped me open my car once, when Cleveland wouldn't have done it).

I'm glad that they are there. Officers who are actually employed by the park tend to have more pride in their work than an off duty moonlighting as a side job.

The CP police do a great service to the park. How often do you hear of big problems a the point? Not very often.

Being out there in black polyester pants and a bullet resistent vest certainly can make a day uncomfortable.

AvalancheSam, An article in the Sandusky Register (09/22/02) about lasuits against the park says that Sandusky is the only city in the nation with two bonded police forces in it.

ever see their swat team?

and i noticed the CPPD there a few years ago...when did they start?

Yeah Sam.. The various "Municipal" police forces of Cleveland and other cities like that are still goverened and bonded as one unit.

"Private" police forces such as campus cops and the like are not considered as a "police force" even if bonded.

It's a technicality I know but the article that 99er is refering too isn't the only thing to site this. The Discovery Channel special on CP referenced this also if I remember. Haven't seen it in a while.

I dont know if this helps, but here goes.

I used to work for CMHA Police and we were each bonded.

I now work for Cleveland PD and we always have the ultimate jurisdiction within the city, and when certain crimes/incidents occur, we are to handle them, that is until the FBI comes in, takes over, and screws everything up.

I wonder if Sandusky Police have a similar rule?

My understanding about the University of Cincinnati police force was that they were completely seperate from the cities department. But then again i really didn't reseasrch it. And i'm not really an expert in law enforcement syntax.

While I appreciate the sense of security the Cedar Point Police offer, I am surprised that metal detectors have not been installed at all the entrances to the park.

Back in 1998, I went to SF in Atlanta, GA (which was a waste of time and $$$), and they had metal detectors--which at first, I found offensive, but now I realize it's a sign of the times. (The SF here--Darien Lake-- has them as well but I think they use them to detect canned beverages being brought into the park-----------security and guest safety is the farthest thing on their minds)!

Alot of the SF parks do have them. SFMM has them but of course they have a demographic problem being that close to L.A.

Not true, Rob. The other forces mentioned are not limited to the city of Cleveland, or even Cuyahoga County, as those other districts extend beyond the city and county's boundries. Perhaps an even better example is the Metroparks, which is spread all over the place.

I am rather suprised that CP does not have metal detectors. I cannot imagine the logistical nightmere this would result in however. Anyway I am glad the CP police force is "bonded" and is self sufficient. Love 'em or hate em they seem to be dedicated to helping people and I feel good when they are there!

C.P. may not have metal detectors, but on many occasions, I have seen police officers outside the main gate have a person step aside while a backpack or similar package is searched.. At Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, I have seen the same thing.
