I have a picture somewhere from I believe 2002 after a Millennium rollback. In the pic a bunch of maintenance people are climbing on the track along Millennium's final overbank, and the train is suspended in place by cables and winches. It was interesting to watch.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
Mean streak Valleyed right before it "grabbed" onto the chain lift last year(2006) Labor Day Weekend. They pulled it up about 1-2 feet with a cherry picker and a chain to get it o the lift. They then ran it thru and took it off the tracks.
I'm going to take a wild guess that there was very little or no graph-coat on the track. You can actually tell the difference from a ride where there's no graph-coat compared to a ride when there's ample graph-coat on the track; and not just because of that wretched sound. It feels different.

Three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40, and a hammer. Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't, WD-40 if it doesn't move and should, and the hammer as the last resort.

This isn't CP related, but I remember this happening since it was my hometown park and I know everyone complained that it took six hours to get them down. Anybody know how long it took them to get the people off of Magnum?
Nick
Usually not long, but most of the stoppages I've heard have occurred on the lift or at one of the block areas (where it is set-up to unload passengers).
Hangman looks like it stopped just outside a block area, almost like if a train stopped just short of the MCBR on Raptor and got stuck. There's even more worry with an invert like that because you can't just have them climb out onto a platform, which is probably why it took so long.

^Exactly...I don't see the issue. Everyone made it off safely, but some people here, still, to this day, talk about it taking too long. I think some of the riders filed a lawsuit for trauma, and then the park closed a few months later without warning in a situation similiar to Geauga Lake.
Nick
I thought Magnum stopped on the pretzel because of wind off the lake. I also thought this was before they put the trims out there.
I could also have a really horrible memory though and be imagining the whole thing. Does anyone else remember this?
If anything, the trims have caused a stoppage or two out on the pretzel, but only with an empty or nearly empty train.

When were Magnum's trim brake added?
Based on the POV video on CP's site that was taken before the third hill was modified the brakes were right after the peak of the hill instead of their current location on the bottom of the hill.

I think they have always been there. I don't know for sure as I didn't ride it in 89.

I don't remember them being there in the early days. But, I also didn't pay as much attention as I do now. If they were there, they definitely weren't using them.
I've heard at six flags during a power outage, a train got stuck during a vertical loop. People were even passed out in their seats...Now I don't know if it's for sure the whole truth, but is it possible? That would suck.
Well, a power outage would not cause a ride to stop in the middle of a loop.
However, Demon (I think, correct me if I'm wrong on the ride) did stop in the middle of the loop when one of the wheels broke. It basically locked up and stopped the train in the apex of the loop. Not sure if people passed out or what injuries they had, but I'm sure it didn't feel good.

The ride you are talking about is Batman and Robin: The Chiller, at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ. The Robin side was stuck in the Cobra Roll following a major power outage.

One of the very, very, very big misperceptions of what happens to roller coasters when the power goes out. People for some reason don't grasp or understand that gravity is the only thing making the ride go once it clears the brakes/lift/launch.
Getting stuck upside down isn't possible unless something major goes wrong with a wheel chassis, which was the case for demon where it stopped in the corkscrew I believe. One thing to pay attention to if you're worried by such things is the size of the wheel chassis themselves. Intamin and B&M both have very thick steel chassis that house the wheels.
Cedar Point has a great safety record and highly trained crew members and maintenance team that are aware of anything that isn't quite right and have the know how to close or check something even if it's the slightest suspension.
It becomes evident very quickly when you're a ride host that people are very concerned about the safety of the rides when in reality there's really nothing to be worried about at a place like CP. At least that's how I feel, I have a lot of trust in the place.
Not that any of you didn't know this already. :)

That's because you're a sheep Craig. You should know that Cedar Fair could care less about safety if it meant more money. ;)
The only ride I felt unsafe on was Firehawk, and it wasn't a maintenance thing, it was that the flyer harness just didn't feel safe, I didn't enjoy it at all. Which is why I will rue the day that Cedar Point gets a flyer. You hear that? I will RUE the day.

A sheep I might be.
So Cedar Fair keeps their money and I stay safe, I think it's a pretty good trade off. :)

Actually, I believe the Batman side of Chiller has gotten stuck in the inverted top hat at least twice, either that or there was one or more Mr. Freeze models that had a similar occurrence. I pretty sure that I've heard of the Premiers getting stuck in the inverted top hat element a few times. *goes hunting for the news articles*
